5th Annual Pickens County Alcohol and
Drug Addiction Recovery Celebration
On Sept. 23, 200 Pickens
County citizens attended the 5th
Annual Pickens County Alcohol
and Drug Recovery Celebration
held at the Jasper United
Methodist Church. The Recovery
Celebration was sponsored by
the Pickens County Anti-Drug
Coalition (PCADC).
“The purpose of the Recovery
Celebration is for the community
to openly offer encouragement to
anyone struggling with alcohol
and drug addiction to come for
ward to receive the caring recov
ery support and treatment that
our community gladly offers,”
stated Greg Mason, PCADC
president.
This community encourage
ment for recovery was voiced
loud and clear at the Recovery
Celebration.
Ron Rucker, pastor of Corner
stone Church, served as the mas
ter of ceremonies, introducing
the featured speakers.
Pickens County Sole Com
missioner Robert Jones congrat
ulated those in attendance who
are in recovery and urged every
one who has an addiction chal
lenge to engage in the recovery
support offered by dedicated pro
fessionals and volunteers.
Kay Lusk, Chris Holt and Dr.
James Craig spoke about their re
covery success.
Mason explained that “al
though some of the topics were
controversial, PCADC respects
the freedom of personal expres
sion regarding recovery experi
ences”.
Bub Ba Q provided the barbe
cue pork supper for everyone in
attendance. Kroger provided a
cake with the decoration, “Con
gratulations on Recovery Suc
cess”.
Volunteers from Ruth House,
a Christian based residential
treatment program for women,
assisted with childcare. Lori
Pieraerts also assisted with child
care.
Volunteers from Timothy
House, a Christian based residen
tial treatment program for men,
served the meal.
Greg Mason explained, “It is
this strong community support
that is so important to overcom
ing the guilt and alienation that
many substance abuse addicts
feel. A caring community that is
open about its concern can di
minish the feelings of guilt and
alienation that often prevent
someone one from seeking re
covery support from a commu
nity that he thinks would
disapprove and criticize.”
On behalf of the Pickens
County Anti-Drug Coalition,
Mason thanks everyone in the
community who assisted with the
Recovery Celebration, helping to
send the message to those with
addiction challenges, “You can
recover, we know you can do it,
and we support you.”
