Happy Ramblers
On Friday morning we went
to Solomon’s on the Creek. Now
that is David’s place and he en
joys it so much! Of course I re
member when Blodger was
living and he fixed up a spot
there and put up an old wood
cook stove and had a picnic table
and Nellie would often do her
canning there. He didn’t have
things fixed up like David does;
he has a neat cabin with a front
porch that looks out of the field
that he keeps mowed off and a
back porch so you can set and
watch the creek flow by. Nellie
can’t get up steps so she uses a
lift David made (Nellie is 92). I
always called David my little
brother and the Solomon’s are
just like family to me. Shirley
was one of my very best friends
and I used to visit her almost
everyday, she was bedfast for
years. She was a year younger
than me. Nellie says I’m like a
daughter to her but I don’t get to
see and do for her like I would
like to.
David has all kind of cooking
events up there and loves for
people to come and enjoy his
place on the creek. Today he was
having the Senior Center group
for a picnic and we were frying
pies. Nellie used to do them by
herself but now she can’t manage
that. We get an assembly line
going, Nellie sits down and
spoons out the amount of dough
for the crust, Sue rolls it out, I fill
and crimp the pie, then drop
them in the hot oil and David
cooks them. We cooked 50 fried
pies! They were delicious. After
lunch (must have been about 30
there) I told funny stories to the
group and left about 1.
Saturday we went to the
“New to You” purse sale at the
hospital that the pink ladies had
to raise money for the Women’s
Center. They had 965 purses
when the sale started. I got 2,
Kay got 1, Sue got a coin purse,
but most of all we had fun! Then
it was on down to James Morris
syrup making at Tate. This is so
interesting; the folks come in and
help just for the fun of working
in this old time kind of thing. He
has such a neat sit-up here and it
makes one feel good just to see
how the people all work together
and just enjoy the time, like it
used to be in years passed and
gone. It makes you think of days
when the world moved slower,
folks were more caring and there
was a feeling of love and close
ness to your fellowman. It would
be fun to stay all day but I don’t
ever have that much time. I’m
glad James does this and gives
people a chance to see how this
is done. I took the boys when
they were younger and I think
they will always remember it; he
let them help a little with each
step of the process. It was a good
day for a small group of Ram
blers. - Ann Parks
Seniors picnic at Solomon’s on the Creek
Beautiful weather, great food, fantastic stories by Ann Parks,
homemade fried apple pies from Miss Nellie Solomon - these are a
few of our favorite things! Over 30 seniors were able to get out into
the great outdoors. With the weather a bit cooler, we just had to have
one more outdoor picnic on the creek! We had a day of fun and
laughter; especially when David Solomon brought out the automatic
bubble blower! If laughter is good medicine than I believe we are
all healed!
If you are a senior citizen and you want to be with people to
laugh, love and grow with...we have just the place for you... wel
come to the Pickens County Senior Center! Open M-F, 8-1.
