Can we call them the oil operas?
By Jumper Cable Man
The drama shows on televi
sion where the show was aimed
at housewives and sponsored by
such companies as Proctor &
Gamble, Colgate-Palmolive and
Lever Brothers came to be
known as “soap operas.” The
drama shows put together by
NASCAR and sponsored by the
oil companies called “Chase
Races” need to be known from
this point on as “oil operas.”
The first week we had Clint
Bowyer winning the race after
his long dry spell of not winning
in Sprint Cup racing for ages and
then the first race of “the Chase”
and he dominates. But wait. The
NASCAR producers of this
show say that he was not to win
in their version of this “oil
opera.” The NASCAR inspec
tors find a way to disqualify
Bowyer but not to take back his
win, just his and his car owner’s
points and any money his crew
chief and car chief might have
made.
Then in week two we have
the four-time champion Jimmy
Johnson coming back to win and
move into 2nd place in the points
chase. But this was not enough
to keep everyone tuned into “the
Chase.” NASCAR needed
something else. Why not have
Bowyer’s teammate Kevin Har-
vick bump Denny Hamlin leav
ing the pits after Hamlin runs his
mouth about something he had
no direct knowledge of concern
ing the cheating by the Bowyer
team? This will make for a lot of
free press since Hamlin and Har-
vick are parked next to each
other in the garage. A perfect
way to keep this “oil opera”
going. We only have eight
“Chase” races to go.
Week three appears to loose
all the drama especially since
Johnson is now in 2nd place in
“the Chase” points race and
looks like he and his crew chief
Chad Kanus have everything in
place for championship number
five. The cheating scandal is fad
ing from everyone’s mind and
Hamlin is not running his mouth
about any of the other competi
tors and Harvick is not parked
next to him in the garage this
week. But wait. Maybe someone
will get too close to one of “the
Chase” competitors or maybe
NASCAR can catch one of the
teams speeding on pit road. Or
maybe Kyle Busch will knock
someone out of his way and they
will retaliate. Why not David
Reutimann? Busch doesn’t care
much for Reutimann and the
feeling is mutual.
If Busch knocks Reutimann
out of the way, it is because
Busch is in “the Chase” and Re
utimann is not. All of the “non-
Chasers” should move over and
let the “Chasers” go by, don’t
you think? Besides, Busch
knows that he can rough-up Re
utimann and not suffer any con
sequences since Reutimann is
not a “Chaser.” Kyle, you might
want to re-think that idea. David
Reutimann is not known for tak
ing a lot of anything off anyone.
The bump was a costly one for
Busch as it knocked him down
four positions in “the Chase” and
could have cost him the champi
onship.
After the race, Busch said that
Reutimann could have gotten
him back next year in one of the
26 races leading up to next
year’s “Chase” but it appears
that Reutimann thought that
Busch might have forgotten why
he was receiving pay back. Re
utimann just wanted to make
sure Busch knew why he was
getting the pay back and by
doing it during the race where it
happened, he will remember it.
All winter long he will remem
ber it! The “oil operas” are heat
ing up!
Watch for the frustration of
“the Chase” to get to Hamlin in
the coming weeks. Up to this
point, all we have of the pressure
getting to Hamlin is the bumping
with Harvick in week two. But
“the Chase” is not over. Hamlin
has more scenes to play out be
fore this year’s “Chase” oil opera
concludes its performance. The
farther behind Hamlin falls in
the points the more the pressure
will get to him. Stay tuned!

North Georgia Falcons
Falcons remain undefeated after
upending Gwinnett County

The North Ga. Falcons have their largest group of seniors (pictured above) ever on this
year’s team.
By Diana McDaniel
This past Friday night, NG
Falcons kept their undefeated
season in tact by winning out
over the undefeated Gwinnett
County Force. This game lived
up to all expectations as these
two evenly matched teams beat
up on each other for four quarters
of hard hitting football.
North Georgia won the coin toss
and deferred to Gwinnett. North
Georgia’s Brett Snyder kicked
the ball into the end zone, pre
venting any return of the opening
kick. Gwinnett started at their
own 20-yard line and tried to run
it up the middle three times, but
could not advance the ball, mak
ing it fourth-and-5 in punting to
the Falcons. Falcons took over
on their own 40-yard line and
after picking up a first down, the
Falcons were unable to advance
the ball any further and had to
punt, giving the ball back to the
Force on their own 10-yard line.
After several power plays up
the middle and picking up a cou
ple of first downs, they finally
got a receiver open and hit him
for a 75 yard TD. Point after
failed. Force 6 - Falcons 0.
On the ensuing kickoff, punt
return specialist and wide re
ceiver, Riley Davis, gathered in
the ball and raced 89 yards for
the Falcons TD to answer. A high
snap resulting in a bad placement
caused Snyder’s kick to go wide
of the goal post leaving the game
tied 6-6.
Both defenses contained the
high powered offense of both
teams for the remainder of the
first quarter with no more scor
ing. In the second period, the de
fense was the ‘name of the
game’, with both teams moving
the ball, but unable to get into the
end zone until 3 minutes before
the half. At that time, Gwinnett
was able to score and the Falcons
were unable to block the PAT
leaving them trailing at the half
by a score of 13-6.
After receiving the kickoff in
the third quarter at their own 20-
yard line, North Georgia got their
offense hitting on all 11 cylinders
and moved the ball the length of
the field mixing their play calling
between running and
passing....using up 7 minutes of
the clock and scoring on a 20
yard TD pass from D-l Prospect,
QB Tim Howard to sophomore
tight end Zane McDaniel to
make the score 13-12. The PAT
was good by D-l Prospect
Kicker Brett Snyder to tie up the
score 13-13.
In the fourth quarter, North
Georgia and Gwinnett’s defenses
battled each others offense with
bruising tackles to keep each
other out of their end zones until
late in the quarter when North
Georgia again mounted a strong
running and passing game that
moved the ball down to Gwin
nett’s 10-yard line. On fourth-
and-5, with 5 minutes remaining
on the clock. Falcon QB Howard
on an option play to the right,
rolled out looking for an open re
ceiver, but instead saw green
grass with no defenders in sight
and sprinted into the end zone for
the score. The PAT by Snyder
was good, putting North Georgia
out front by a score of 20-13.
With 4:55 left in the game,
North Georgia’s Snyder kicked
the ball deep into the end zone.
Gwinnett county beginning at
their own 20-yard line, mounted
their own powerful march to
ward the Falcon end zone, using
their strong running and passing
attack and eating up the clock as
they methodically moved the ball
down the field with only 25 sec
onds remaining in the game, the
Gwinnett QB took the snap from
center, dropped back in the
pocket and hit #24 Zavior
Thompson for the score. North
Georgia 20 - Gwinnett 19.
On a personal foul against
North Georgia occurring after
the score, the ball was placed at
the 1 yard line for the PAT at
tempt. Gwinnett elected to go for
the win and ran a full back draw
off tackle, but the Falcons de
fense led by Josh Pack, Kris
Setser, Adam Bieber and Zach
Heffner, came off the ball with
an explosive surge that stopped
the full back in the back field.
Score 20-19. Gwinnett tried an
on-side kick but North Georgia’s
Michael Jefferson jumped on the
ball at the 49 yard line with only
20 seconds left in the game. Fal
con QB Howard ran out the
clock leaving the Falcons alone
in 1st place in the GFC Confer
ence and still undefeated.
This Friday, Oct. 8, North
Georgia will be playing their
homecoming game and celebrat
ing Senior night beginning at
6:30 at River Ridge High School
in Woodstock, Ga.
