The Reformation
Part I
The last day of October marks
the beginning of one of the great
est movements in the history of
Christianity for it was on that
day that the German monk, Mar
tin Luther, in 1517 nailed the “95
Theses” (issues that he wanted to
debate) on the door of Christ
Church in Wittenburg and the
"Reformation" began. Luther
had no desire to begin a new
church. He simply wanted to re
form the existing religious estab
lishment; to bring it back to
Scripture, God’s Holy Word.
Those who followed Luther be
came known as “Protestants” be
cause they protested against
unbiblical practices of the day.
One of the major themes of
the Reformation was the total au
thority of the Bible - Sola Scrip-
tura (Scripture Alone). Scripture
was viewed to be God’s Word (2
Timothy 3:16-17) for He in
spired its writing by sending the
Holy Spirit to move its human
authors (2 Peter 1:19-21). As a
result, the Bible was to be the
only authority in all matters of
faith and practical living. Luther
himself demonstrated the impor
tance of Scripture’s authority
when he responded to the com
mand at the Diet of Worms in
1521 that he admit that the things
he had written were wrong.
Luther said: “It is impossible for
me to recant unless I am proved
to be wrong by the testimony of
Scripture. My conscience is
bound to the Word of God. It is
neither safe nor honest to act
against one’s conscience. Here I
stand. God help me. I cannot do
otherwise.”
Because the Bible was au
thoritative, the Reformers sought
to have it printed in the language
of the people so that they could
read, understand and apply it.
Until that time it was written in
Latin and because the average
person could not read nor under
stand the language, they were
dependent on someone else to
tell them what it meant. Now the
people were able to read it for
themselves! This concept is
known as “perspicuity”, which
literally means “see-through
ableness”. This means that every
person has the ability to read,
study, understand, and obey the
Word of God (Matthew 7:24-
28).
The conviction of the Re
formers is the reason that we are
able to read the Bible in English
today. This is a privilege that
many of us take for granted. Our
Bibles are covered with dust or
sit at the bottom of the book pile.
Rather than the binding being
broken and the pages discolored
from use - our Bible’s look brand
new! May that not be true in
your life. I encourage you to be
a student of the Bible! Read it
consistently; gratefully; dili
gently; dependantly; prayerfully;
and submissively for it is God’s
Word and it is given to us for our
benefit (Matthew 7:24-28). God
bless!

Books Are Noble
B ooks have the power to change lives; without them our
knowledge of the world is limited. One immortal book
offers beauty, hope and inspiration - more than any other.
It is the story of both what has been and what will be. This
book is God’s Word, the Bible. In Job 12:13 we read, “To
God belong wisdom and power; counsel and understanding
are his.” Read this book, it will change your life!
