Gordon and Pickens team up to nourish minds, bodies of children in need
Pickens representatives Lynn Palmer, Shelley Cantrell, Whitney Carnes and Larry Ledbetter with
Gordon County staff members.
On Sept. 30, the international
relief organization Feed The
Children delivered backpacks to
M&S Logistics in Gordon
County. The backpacks were
filled with a variety of school
supplies. Also, non-perishable
food, personal care items and
books were donated. Pickens and
Gordon County were among a
group of school systems which
received these items. The back
packs will be distributed to chil
dren most in need throughout
Pickens and Gordon. Our focus
is to fulfill the educational and
personal needs of children who
may be less fortunate. Special
thanks to Whitney Carnes, SSW,
Gordon County, for her efforts in
coordinating this partnership.
“We believe in the power of
education to reduce and reverse
the cycle of poverty,” as stated
by Larry Jones, president and co
founder of Feed The Children.
“Providing homeless school chil
dren with ‘survival items’ such as
school supplies, hygiene items
and food help meet immediate
physical needs. It also helps se
cure our long-term hope for these
children: that they will excel at
school and eventually break free
from a life of poverty.”

Frances Jones, Feed The Chil

Amicalola EMC employees sponsoring food drives
total of 147 food items. Silent he
roes began to emerge. One em
ployee brought in a box full of
food, far exceeding the request of
a jar of peanut butter and a jar of
jelly. Another employee pledged
a dollar a day to the effort.
Now Amicalola EMC is ask
ing you to help. Collection bins
have been placed in the lobby of
each local EMC office. When
you stop by, drop a can of soup
or a jar of peanut butter in the
bin. Any non-perishable food
item is critically needed. The
need is great and the rewards are
too.

Asking for
community support
We all know someone who is
out of work. There are also those
who are working, but struggling
to make ends meet. Hunger is a
terrible thing. One who is suffer
ing from hunger finds it hard to
work, go to school or even con
centrate on a simple task.
The employees of Amicalola
EMC have joined together to
help those in need in our commu
nities. Beginning in September,
after talking with the local food
pantries, employees decided to
begin collecting non-perishable
food items and deliver to the
local food pantries. After hearing
heart breaking stories of the vast
need in our own communities,
Amicalola EMC employees
knew it was the right thing to do.
Word spread; employees
began to get excited and the proj
ect took off. Food collection bins
were placed throughout the three
EMC locations in Dahlonega, El-
lijay and Jasper.
Every two weeks, employees
are asked to bring items in. So
far, Amicalola EMC has an
nounced PB&J Day, Soup Day
and Tuna Day. The very first
week, employees brought in a

The Land Judging Career De

dents the opportunity to
determine land classification, use
and treatment practices for se
lected sites. The students must
consider topsoil texture and
thickness, effective depth, per
meability of subsoil, slope, ero
sion, drainage and land
capability. The team members re
ceived their training as part of
Basic Agriscience and other
Agriculture Education classes at
PHS. All of the class members
were trained in land judging and
those interested in competing
made up the land judging teams.
The land judging training has
career applications in soil sci
ence, natural resources, environ
mental science, agronomy and
other areas. The Career Develop
ment Event is one of the many
activities local FFA members can
participate in as a part of the Na
tional FFA Organization. The
FFA mission is to make a posi
tive difference in the lives of
over 500,000 members by devel
oping their potential for premier
leadership, personal growth and
career success through agricul
ture education.
Our team had a good day,
placing 9th out of the 16 senior
teams. Austin Davis was Pickens
FFA’s high individual ranking
14th out of all the senior partici
pants. The team thanks the Geor

North Region Area Agriculture
Teachers and Taylor Farms for
making the event possible.
