A look at domestic violence
What is domestic violence?
Domestic violence is about one
person getting and keeping
power and control over another
person in an intimate relation
ship. The abusive person might
be a current or former spouse,
live-in partner or dating partner.
Domestic violence has been de
scribed as “a pattern of behavior
in which one intimate partner
uses physical violence, coercion,
threats, intimidation, isolation
and emotion, sexual or economic
abuse to control and change the
behavior of the other partner”.
Descriptions of patterns of be
havior include physical abuse
which is grabbing, pinching,
shoving, slapping, hitting, hair
pulling, biting, denying medical
care or forcing alcohol and/or
drug abuse; sexual abuse is co
ercing or attempting to coerce
any sexual contact without con
sent including marital rape, forc
ing sex after physical beating,
attacks on sexual parts of the
body or treating another in a sex
ually demeaning manner; eco
nomic abuse is making or
attempting to make a person fi
nancially dependent by maintain
ing total control over financial
resources, withholding access to
money, forbidding attendance to
school or employment; emo
tional abuse is undermining a
persons sense of self worth by
constant criticism, belittling
one’s abilities, name calling,
damaging a partner’s relationship
with the children; and psycho
logical abuse is causing fear by
intimidation, threatening physi
cal harm to self, partner or chil
dren, destruction of pets sand
property, mind games or forcing
isolation from friends, family,
school and/or work.
Georgia’s Violence Statistics

836 Georgia citizens have lost
their lives due to domestic vio
lence. Georgia is ranked 15th in
the nation for its rate of men
killing women and Georgia has

according to recent studies. In
42% of the cases studied through
Georgia DV Fatality Review
Project, children were present
during the killing. In 2008, law
enforcement to 58,420 domestic
