The GLOW band is one you
won't want to miss, ask anyone
that attended last year's Fur Ball!
GLOW was formed 30
months ago by two friends, Mark
Sutherland and Robert Taylor.
They had unique reasons for cre
ating a new band. Robert, bom
blind, was driven with the desire
for crystal clean music, vocals,
and harmony. Mark, a business
man, wanted a band that was fun,
put on a great show and focused
on the audience. GLOW was the
result of two completely different
concepts which blended into the
fastest growing cover band in the
Southeast.
Mark was a founding member
of the band “Choice” which be
came exceeding popular in the
mid seventies throughout the
Southeast. The group was known
for good music but crowds
mostly came to the band because
they were so much fun. Members
of the band did some zany things
and loved to play pranks on each
other and the audience. The
group eventually disbanded
when DJs began to displace live
entertainment. Mark spent the
next 30 years starting and selling
a string of successful businesses.
He enjoyed going out and listen
ing to some very good bands but
most were not much fun. Mark
developed a yearning to form an
other band which would not only
play well, but would bring the
FUN back to entertaining.
Robert Taylor was born in a
small farm near Oklahoma City.
In a world with only sound and
touch, the blind boy took to the
guitar, violin, and vocals like a
fish to water. A risky eye opera
tion gave him sight at the age of
12, but not before he developed
perfect pitch and an unbelievable
sense of music. At an early age
Robert performed with the Okla
homa Symphony, won the na
tional “Golden Fiddle”
championship, and gained much
notoriety. He played on hundreds
of radio and TV commercials and
toured every comer of the world
with artists such as Waylon Jen
nings, Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff
Walker and others. Robert landed
in Atlanta and played with a
number of very good groups but
he had a desire to form his own
band. His idea was to form a
band with crystal clean sound,
exceptional vocals, perfectly bal
anced harmony, and precise
music. To him, any music that
wasn’t perfect was like finger
nails on a chalk board.
Through a series of coinci
dences, Mark and Robert met.
The two could not have been
more different; Mark is an older,
balding, successful business man
while Robert is a very tall strug
gling musician. They realized
their common goal and GLOW
was formed. Mark handled the
booking, management, and
funded the equipment. Robert
was the director of music and
also played violin, fiddle, and
guitar. Months of auditions re
sulted in procuring some of the
best vocalists and musicians in
the Southeast. Their first member
was Tim Tice who won the tele
vised “So You Want to Be a Star”
competition in Nashville. Soon
other exceptional performers
joined. They were attracted to the
prospects of being part of a band
that strives for musical perfection
but would perform with energy
and fun, with a total focus on the
audience.
The band practiced for over a
year before accepting any public
appearances. They simply would
not perform until the music was
“right.” From the moment
GLOW was brought out into the
light, their popularity has shot up
like a rocket. In just 18 short
months, the band has become
one of the most highly booked
groups with over 80 engage
ments in 2010.
Audiences seem to enjoy
GLOW. Perhaps the group takes
them back to an era when you
could understand the words, hear
the harmony, pick out individual
instruments, dance to the beat
and, most importantly, smile and
have fun. Mark and Robert are
very pleased the hard work has
paid off. GLOW is bringing
smiles to faces and people to the
dance floor.
