The Lions Club sponsored a trip to Merciers ’ Apple Orchard for the folks at the Pickens Senior
Center. You would think the bags of fresh apples is what got them there... but I am convinced it was
the beautiful scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains on the way up, or maybe it was the warm fried pies
once we got there! Any way you look at it, a good time was had by all! Ray and Betty Ferrell (Lions
Club) were our cheerful captains that day, who kept us all safe and comfortable!
Come join us here at the center... or on our next outing... just come join us! 400 Stegall Drive,

It s Shoe Box Time
Local churches prepare to help
hurting children worldwide
Apple season is upon us
First place photo in the 2009 Marbelous Photo Contest, taken by Janie Carver.
Excitement is growing as area
churches, organizations and indi
viduals have begun packing
‘gifts of love’ for this year’s Op
eration Christmas Child National
Collection Week Nov. 15-22.
Unlike many other wonderful
children’s outreach ministries
that take place throughout the
year, and especially during the
Christmas season, Operation
Christmas Child brings joy to
millions of hurting children
around the world through toys,
hygiene items, and school sup
plies - plus something extra -
packed inside a shoe box. The
boxes take a long journey and
arrive filled not only with ‘good
ies’ but with love and are over
flowing with hope and the
opportunity for each recipient to
know Jesus as their personal
Lord and Savior. You could call
this a ‘Shoe Box to Bible’ min
istry as each shoe box serves as a
joyful vehicle to show these chil
dren that there is hope for eter
nity. They receive ‘The Greatest
Gift of All” and can begin “The
Greatest Journey” of their lives.
Check it out at http://www.the-
greatestj oumey. org/
You can help by ...
• Preparing - Enlist everyone
you know to begin collecting and
filling shoe boxes so that we can
reach even more children this
Christmas season. It’s never too
early to start!
• Being bold - Ask dentists for
donations of toothpaste/ tooth
brushes; seek donations from
companies that use promotional
items. Some may prefer to make
a cash donation towards the min
istry, sponsor several shoe boxes
or allow a display to be set up in
their office. Be resourceful and
you’ll be amazed at the generos
ity of our community.
• Obtaining & packing Shoe
Boxes - Visit stores that sell
shoes, from dollar stores to high
end ones, and ask for their dis
carded shoe boxes. They’ll be
glad to give them to you as
they’re often thrown away. Even
better, purchase a 6-qt. plastic
shoe box for $1 and make that
part of your gift. Recipients and
their families can use these for
storage or for carrying water;
since they have lids there’ll be
less spillage, too.
Once you have boxes, fill
them with school supplies, toys,
hygiene items, hard candy and a
note of encouragement. Notes
and photos are treasured by the
children as they make the gifts
more personal. Many pen pal
friendships have begun from
these notes - several here in
Pickens County.
• Sponsor Shoe Boxes - For
just $7 you can sponsor a shoe
box for someone who doesn’t
feel they can both fill a box and
make the suggested donation.
This amount helps offset the cost
of shipping the millions of boxes
collected, plus the cost of print
ing materials including the Dis-
cipleship Program and the New
Testaments. That may sound like
a lot but have you checked the
price of mailing even one filled
shoe box anywhere in the US or
printing even a few pages?
• Become a part of the OCC
Team - There are year-round op
portunities for you to become a
part of the OCC Volunteer Team.
In Pickens County we have one
Church Relations Specialist and
one Prayer Team Member. We
would welcome additional mem
bers in these two areas as well as
Community Relations and Media
Relations. If you feel led to be
come a part of this life-changing
ministry and serve alongside us,
go to
www.samaritanspurse.org/occ
and take the first step by com
pleting the Volunteer Interest
Form. You may also contact our
Area Coordinator, Gina Brown,
at ginatoo@yahoo.com, 770-
684-8054 or our Regional office
at gwalker@samaritan.org, 770-
777-9342.
Prayer is what allows the Op
eration Christmas Child ministry
to reach so many hurting chil
dren, so please make prayer a
part of your OCC shopping and
packing because God already has
specific children in mind to re
ceive your boxes. There are
many ways to go about filling
shoe boxes and our area Church
Relations Specialist has some
great ideas about how to increase
the number of shoe boxes col
lected this year. Contact Wanda
Payne at we payne@wind-
stream.net or call 706-692-3914.

Tate Day again will feature
Marbelous Photo Contest
By Lawton Baggs
One of the popular features of
the annual Marble Valley Friends
Tate Day event is the Marbelous
Photo Contest. The theme is the
many uses of marble in Pickens
County. The county’s most fa
mous product is commonly
found in decorative and utilitar
ian uses around the area.
Whether in cemeteries, yards,
homes or public buildings, mar
ble is widely used. The contest
seeks pictures that capture its
many uses shown in an artistic
manner.
Those entering the contest
should be aware that both color
and black and white categories
exist. Pictures must be at least
8x10 in size. No matting or fram
ing is required. On the back of
each photo give the name and
contact information of the pho
tographer, name of the picture (if
appropriate) and location of the
subject in Pickens County. Sub
mit entries by Nov. 4 to Lawton
Baggs, 399 Stephens View Rd.,
Jasper, Ga. 30143; call 706-692-
6598; or e-mail,
dlb51499@windstream.net
Photos will be on public dis
play at the Old Tate Gym on Tate
Day Nov. 6. First, second and
third place certificates will be
awarded in each category. Pic
tures will be returned to photog
raphers after Tate Day.
The criteria on which photos
will be judged by professional
photographers are: relevance to
theme, composition, creativity,
technical quality and overall im
pression (the “Wow” factor). No
photo will be exhibited that does
not meet the stated criteria.
The 2009 contest winner was
Janie Carver of Tate whose photo
showed the many uses of marble
found in her own home (see ac
companying photo). Whatever
one’s degree of skill as a photog
rapher, each is invited to look
around, snap a picture and show
it to visitors to Tate on Nov. 6.
With a grudge match for bragging rights on the line this past weekend in the longstanding
Pickens-Gilmer football rivalry, clients of the Burnt Mountain Center in Jasper sounded off
Friday in a pep rally for both high school teams. About as many Center clients reside in
Gilmer as in Pickens County, so loyalties stand strongly divided though good-natured.
After a Bobcat cheer preferred by purple partisans, Pickens High cheerleaders did some
airborne antics and stirred the Dragon throng. Football enthusiasm swelled a party that began
with grilled chicken and cold drinks.
Pickens High cheerleaders Dana Bunch, Nicole Hodgins, Alisha Lawson, and Emilee
Riley raised the rah with help from Dragon players Bryce Grimmett and Jordan Shaw (all
shown above with Center fans).
Though Gilmer won the game, this isn V over. It’s never over. We ’ll bring it next year, you
Bobcats!
