PAGE 16A PICKENS COUNTY PROGRESS THURSDAY. OCTOBER 21.2010
Qualified.
By Matt Moore
On Oct. 15, Pickens County
Sole Commissioner Robert Jones
and Mayor John Weaver raised
the Standard of a Drug Free
Pickens with a joint proclama
tion of 2010 Pickens County Red
Ribbon Week, Oct. 23-31.
The highlight of Red Ribbon
Week will be the Red Ribbon
Community Celebration on
Thursday, Oct. 28, 6:45 p.m., at
the Pickens High School, with
the presentation of the play,
Pharm Party.
The Pickens County Anti
Drug Coalition (PCADC) will
provide a complimentary pre
play spaghetti dinner beginning
at 5:30 at the PHS Cafeteria.
Pharm Party, based on real-
life events, is a dramatized ac
count of how early use of drugs
and alcohol quickly creates an al
most unconquerable addiction
that chains a person to life-de
stroying behavior. The play is
produced by Ruth House, a resi
dential regeneration program for
women. The actresses in the play
are ladies from the Ruth House.
After the play, PCADC mem
ber Donna McDonald, a parent
who has school-age children,
will talk about what parents can
do to guide their children to ac
tivities and peer groups where
young people can have fun,
enjoy life and nurture positive
personal relationships without
the distortion and destruction of
drugs and alcohol.
Winners of the various Red
Ribbon Week contests held at the
Pickens schools will be an
nounced at the Celebration.
Information will be provided
by a law enforcement officer
about the dangers of various
drugs, including prescription
drugs, and the effects that they
have on behavior and appear
ance.
Greg Mason, PCADC presi
dent, says, “The Red Ribbon
Community Celebration is a
great opportunity for our com
munity to come together in sup
port of a Drug Free Pickens, and
for parents to understand the
ways in which the drug culture
can trap our youth into fatal ex
perimentation with drugs and al
cohol.”
In the proclamation, Jones
and Weaver urged businesses,
schools, law enforcement offi
cials, service organizations, faith
community, governments, sports
teams and individuals to demon
strate their commitment to the
Standard of a Drug Free Pickens
by wearing and displaying red
ribbons during Red Ribbon
Week and participating in a wide
array of drag prevention activi
ties during the week.
These activities include a
“Drug Free Pledge Wall” in the
Pickens High School Cafeteria;
distribution by the sheriff’s of
fice of “I Am Drag Free”
bracelets to Pickens County stu
dents; distribution of Red Rib
bons at the 10/29 football game;
daily Red Ribbon activities at all
of the Pickens County schools;
display of large Red Ribbon
bows throughout Pickens
County; and the Red Ribbon Cel
ebration on Oct. 28.
“The drag culture is a power
ful force in our community,” ex
plains Richard “Fergie”
Ferguson, PCADC vice presi
dent. “That is why Red Ribbon
Week is important. Red Ribbon
Week activities serve as a foun
dation for us throughout the year
to be constant in our actions to
promote the values of a drag free
life style and to continually ex
pose the dangers and the reach of
the drag culture in our commu
nity.”

Safely Home
I am now in heaven, dear ones
Oh so happy and so bright
There is a perfect joy and beauty
In the everlasting light.
All the pain and grief is over,
Every restless tossing passed;
I am now at peace forever.
Safely home in heaven at last.
