“The problem of domestic vi

Thanks to
New Lebanon
As we prepare for upcoming
Christmas and Valentine mail
collections, Friends of Our
Troops Headquarters would like
to extend special thanks to the
New Lebanon Presbyterian
Church in Jasper. Led by Pegge
Murphy, they were the #1 church
in Georgia in the most recent
campaign.
Cards and letters are received
from all across the nation, mixed
thoroughly, then divvied up into
hundreds of packages, both large
and small, to be sent to military
units across the U.S. and around
the world.
As the continuation of the
Vietnam Mail Call project which
was launched in 1965, this mail
has been boosting the morale of
our men and women in uniform
for almost a half-century.
Anyone who would like to
know how to join the Fan Mail
for the Troops campaign can re
ceive complete information and
instructions by sending their
name and mailing address to
Friends of Our Troops, PO. Box

The Jasper Lions Club held its
semi-monthly meeting Oct. 14
with President Monroe Swillley
presiding. Meetings are held at
Dunn’s Restaurant - Hwy. 515 &
Hwy. 108 on the second and
fourth Thursday of each month at
7 p.m.
Following the Invocation and
Pledge to the Flag, Margo Austin
gave a report on Lions or family
members having illnesses or un
dergoing medical treatment.
President Swilley welcomed
Zone Chair Lion Sara Henson of
the Ellijay Lions Club who intro
duced Travis Parker, president of
the Blue Ridge Lions Club. Sara
and Jasper Lion Tony Pishnery
presented him 22 American flags
to be used in the flag program
they are now starting in Blue

District 18-A includes clubs in
Blue Ridge, Ellijay, Jasper, Ball

Caysville and LEO Clubs in
Pickens County High School and
Pickens County Middle School.
The next Zone meeting will be
held in Blue Ridge on Nov. 16.
Following dinner, President
Swilley introduced the special
guest speaker of the evening,
Past District Governor Vanessa
Stanley of the Atlanta Metro
Lions Club. She gave a most in
formative and interesting talk on
the Lions Clubs International Di

mission of the program is “to
conduct and support local and
large-scale effort leading to the
control and treatment of diabetes
and its complications through ed
ucation, prevention and re
search”.
The program is an effective
way for Lions to educate their
communities about diabetes pre
vention and control. Diabetes
and diabetic retinopathy are the
leading cause of vision loss in
adults of working age in industri
alized countries. Jasper Lions
will be exploring ways to take
part in the program here.
In the announcement session
of the meeting, Melanie Effler
reported that collections for the
annual Fill-A-Stocking fund pro
gram will be underway soon and
1,075 children from 467 local
families were served by the pro
gram last year.
Lawton Baggs announced that
the club’s participation in the
CARES program is still under
way the first and third evenings
in the month from 6-8 for citi
zens of Pickens County who are
in need of food and cannot come
during regular hours and days.
Past Council Chairman Mark
Miller announced that planning
is still underway to begin a new
Teachers Supply Project begin
ning in January 2011. He also ad
vised that the Lions Lighthouse
and the Jasper First Baptist
Church are planning another trip
to Ghana next June to deliver
2,500 pairs of eyeglasses and
anyone interested in making that
trip will be welcome.
Tony Pishnery reminded
members that funds generated by
the pancake breakfast the club is
sponsoring at Fatz Cafe Saturday
morning, Nov. 13 go to the club’s
Fill-A-Stocking Fund. Members
will be there to serve the cus
tomers.
Secretary Leslie Miller re
minded those present that the
Club is again sponsoring the an

Nov. 11 and information on the
event is available for individuals

706-635-5913.
Jasper Lions look forward to
continuing to carry out their
