THURSDAY. OCTOBER 21.2010 PICKENS COUNTY PROGRESS PAGE 3A
Tater Patch Players
Smoke on the Mountain, a show on the road
Vera Sanders (Bay Cagle) challenges Rev. Oglethorpe
(Caleb Smith) as the family prepares to sing.
Miss Maudie (Jan Davis), left, and Miss Myrtle (Sandra
Lewis) prepare to evaluate the singers.
In addition to eight shows at
the Pickens Chamber of Com
merce, Tater Patch Players are
proud to announce that they are
performing Smoke in three other
shows in two locations. There
will be two shows at the Gilmer
Arts and Heritage Association
(GAHA) facility in Ellijay and
one at the Chapel at Big Canoe.
The Pickens shows, sponsored
by Community Bank of Pickens
Coimty, will be the first perform
ances. They will be Oct. 28, 29
and Nov. 4, 5, 6 at 7:30 and Oct.
30, 31 and Nov. 7 at 2 at the
Chamber of Commerce.
For the Chamber of Com
merce shows, tickets are $8 for
students and $12 for adults at
Community Bank of Pickens
Coimty locations and at Jasper
Drug. Tickets will be $2 more at
the box office. Please pay by
cash or check at these locations.
You may buy tickets online at the
troupe’s Web site www.tater-
patchplayers.org. For the shows
in the Big Canoe Chapel (706-
268-3203) and at GAHA in Elli
jay (706-635-5605) contact them
for ticket prices, directions and
seat availability.
For each of these shows, a
small country church is recreated
for you to attend. You will be de
lighted by the Sanders Family
bringing you the finest in gospel
music. Presides over this evening
is the daring young pastor, Rev.
Oglethorpe (Caleb Smith). He
has decided to bring the Sanders
family to sing in his little church.
The Sanders family had quit the
gospel circuit some years ago
due to the bad health of Burl’s
mama. Now she is gone on and
the urge to sing and travel is
growing in the family. Into this
situation came Rev. Oglethorpe
and his leaky radiator. Him
breaking down at the Burl
Sanders filling station was
“meant to be” says Burl. The
pastor and the singer immedi
ately make plans for the family’s
return to singing. But as they ar
rive at the church they are
watched very carefully by two
sisters. Their father was a
founder of the little church and
they see their place in life to keep
that church, including Rev.
Oglethorpe, on the straight and
narrow. They certainly aren’t
sure they approve of this singing
group. The old piano was plenty
of music for them.
Jan Davis (Miss Maudie) is a
veteran of the troupe. She has ap
peared in numerous productions,
most recently as the decidedly
manly Shirley Moskowitz in The
Producers. She always brings a
comic flourish when she appears.
She is accompanied in this show
by Sandra Lewis (Miss Myrtle)
who is relatively new to the
stage. She has appeared a few
times in her past, in Stephens and
Clayton counties, but has been
very busy as a sixth grade
teacher and the wife of a minister
of late. She knew the play, hav
ing performed in it some years
ago, and took the chance and au
ditioned because, she says, “I
need a laugh.” These two fine ac
tresses bring laughs aplenty as
they sit, up on a deacons bench
throughout the show and register
their many opinions of this
Sanders Family, without having
to say a word.
Rev. Oglethorpe meanwhile is
busy trying to keep control of his
own church. The Sanders Family
and especially Vera (Thelma
Cagle) are very forceful perform
ers and the battle for control be
tween them and the pastor is
hilarious. Caleb Smith is a new
comer to the stage. He was cast
as the pastor when the previous
actor had to drop out of the pro
duction. They had attended the
same church and the departing
actor urged him to try out. He has
become an immediate hit with
his fellow actors and will be a
delight for the audience. Caleb
said he was very hesitant to take
a lead role for his first stage ap
pearance, but the rest of the cast
say, as Burl says of meeting the
pastor: It was meant to be. The
Tater Patch Players invite you to
join them and see these fine ac
tors and judge for yourself.

Rotarian’s Gaye Cantrell and Tom Eubanks welcome
GRSP student Christian Jon Dickenson (center).
By Barry Hardison
The Rotary Club of Jasper
and three sister Rotary clubs,
Canton, Cherokee and Wood-
stock, are co-sponsors of a for
eign student for a years study in
a Georgia College or University.
Jasper is designated as the 2010-
11 Host Club for the group’s stu
dent.
The program, Georgia Rotary
Student Program, or GRSP as it
is known in Rotary circles, was
created by Georgia clubs in 1946
and hosted the first four students
in 1947. In the following 63
years, Georgia Rotary clubs have
hosted almost 4,000 students
from around the world. This
year, GRSP has 61 students from
20 countries enrolled in institu
tions of higher learning around
the State of Georgia. The Host
Clubs & GRSP Endowment pay
all school fees, room and board
along with a textbook allowance.
Students are responsible for
transportation from their home to
Georgia and spending monies for
the school year. The Host Club in
turn recruits a Host Family from
its membership. That Host Fam
ily, or in the case of Jasper is a
Host Dad, Tom Eubanks, do
whatever any family would ex
pect to do for their 18-year-old
university freshman. It can be a
learning experience, especially if
the host has not had previous ex
perience with 21 st-century
teenagers.
Jasper Rotary is hosting an
outstanding young man, Chris
tian Jon Dickenson, introduced
to all American friends as
“Chris”, from the village of Ban
gor on Dee on the outskirts of the
City of Wrexham (40,000 +
pop.) in County of Wrexham,
Wales, United Kingdom. Chris is
a freshman at Reinhardt Univer
sity studying social and political
course to prepare for his univer
sity studies for a career in Crim
inal Justice. In May of this year
Chris completed what is known
in the UK as 6 Form studies
(similar to a USA 2 year Junior
College) and took his “A Level”
tests for university acceptance.
After arriving in Georgia, Chris
received notice of his acceptance
to a top Welsh University for
2011, Aberystwyth University on
the west coast of Wales, voted in
2009 by an international student
survey as the #1 “Place To Be
Enrolled” out of 128 schools
around the world (sorry UGA).
Chris is the only son and the
third child of Jon and Donna
Dickenson who also has three
daughters, two of whom have
been previous GRSP partici
pants.
Thanks to the Internet, Chris
had introduced himself and his
soccer playing background to
Reinhardt’s Eagles Coach Dan
Famham who invited Chris to
come early for soccer tryouts in
August. Chris did and is playing
as a member of the Reinhardt
2010 Eagles Soccer Team.
One responsibility of all
GRSP students is to present to
their Host club(s) a formal intro
duction of themselves and their
country. Last Wednesday (Oct.
13) Chris was the Jasper’s guest
speaker to just that. His Power
Point presentation with his nar
ration of arrival, Wales history
and geography, GRSP and his
fellow GRSP students from
around the world, family, home
town, Reinhardt Soccer team and
dorm - class experiences and last
a brief Welsh language lesson.
