Foothills Community
We at Foothills Community
Church love all God’s children
and have a very active children’s
ministry. This Saturday our chil
dren’s ministry took a group of
14 children and nine adults on an
outing to “Uncle Shucks Com
Maze” and was that quite the ad
venture. What an experience to
run through the winding maze of
corn, on a quest to find all the
punches that marked our cards.
As a parent, we want our chil
dren to love the Word of God, to
be a part of a community and

using their spiritual gifts within
the body someday. Being a part
of a children’s ministry can help
them do just that.
The Children’s Ministry gets
together once a month with ac
tivities for children, kindergarten
thought 5th grade, and on Nov.
13 we are going to Hidden Cove
Farms for our annual fall wiener
roast. The kids love climbing on
the rocks, making a craft, roast
ing hot dogs and making S’-
Mores at our bonfire. Once
everyone’s tummy is full, we set
tle down for a devotion to end
the day. If you are looking for
children’s activity with good
wholesome fun and want them to
learn more about the Bible and
our Savior, Jesus Christ, then
give us a call and sign them up
for this event.
We invite you to come Sun

The Reformation
Part II
We have been examining the
themes of the Reformation,
which was a great revival that
took place under the leadership
of Martin Luther in the 1500s
and sought to reform the church
according to the Scripture- God’s
Holy Word. The first theme we
examined - “Scripture Alone”
(Sola Scriptura) addressed the
issue of final authority. “Grace
Alone” (Sola Gratia), the second
theme teaches that salvation is a
wonderful gift given to unde
serving and unworthy sinners. A
good way to remember this is the
acrostic: God’s Riches At
Christ’s Expense. The third,
which we discuss today is “Faith
Alone” (Sola Fide).
Luther had been struggling
with his own unworthiness and
the burden of sin. From time to
time the rays of light fell into the
darkness of his soul through the
writings of the early church fa
thers such as Bernard of Clair-
vaux and Augustine who stressed
the free grace of Christ for salva
tion. Above all he studied the
Scripture. Sometime toward the
end of 1512, Luther was sitting
in his room in Wittenburg with
his Bible open before him. He
had begun to study Paul’s letter
to the Romans, and coming to
verse 17 of chapter one, he read:
“the righteous will live by faith.”
He paused. He pondered. Then
unspeakable joy flooded his
heart. The burden of his soul
rolled away. Up until now he had
tried to earn his salvation by his
good works, but he had never
been able to feel that he had done
enough. Now God had opened
his eyes. Luther had learned that
mann is saved not by works but
by faith. Romans 1:17 had be
come to him the “gate of Para
dise”. That was Luther’s
conversion.
Faith means for a sinner to
turn away from his self-esteem
and self-confidence to trust in
Christ Alone for salvation. This
was the response of Paul to the
jailer in Philippi who asked what
must I do to be saved, to which
he said, “Believe (put your faith
in) in the Lord Jesus, and you
will be saved” (Acts 16:31). It is
through faith that we are justified
before God.
This element of faith involves
three parts. The first is the en
trance of “light” into the soul as
the spiritually dead sinner is re
generated by the Holy Spirit
(John 3) and now able to receive
the truth and understand the
gospel. The second we will call
“heat” into the soul as the sinner
comes to a personal conviction
of sin and his inability to save
himself. There is a sense of sor
row and brokenness which cre
ates the need of Christ as Savior.
Thirdly, the entrance of “power”
into the soul as the sinner turns
from his sin and flees to Christ!
The sinner receives Jesus as his
Lord and Savior and trusts in
Him alone for salvation. Thus the
significance of Paul’s statement:
“the righteous shall live by
faith.”
