September FFA livestock activities
By Courtney Childers
FFA Reporter
The Pickens County FFA
Livestock Showteam took to the
road for the Sept. 18 weekend to
compete in not one but two live
stock shows. While the Heifer
exhibitors headed out for
Dahlonega to participate in the
Heifers in the Hills Show, the
“Hog Squad” traveled west to
participate in the Swine Show in
conjunction with the Northwest
Regional Fair in Calhoun. Fall is
always busy for FFA livestock
exhibitors because of the number
of fairs in our area that host live
stock activities.
The Cattle activities began
early on Saturday morning with
exhibitors taking the ring in
Dahlonega at 10. Pickens has be
come very familiar with the fa
cilities at Lumpkin County High
School having participated at
several shows at that location
over the last two years. Ex
hibitors from the Pickens County
FFA Chapter who participated in
the show included Kayla Collis,
Pam Southerland, Elaina McTag-
gart, A.J. Bray and Heather
Parker. The heifer exhibitors did
well throughout the show with
several high placings. The high
point of the show came during
the Hereford Division when
Pickens exhibitor Pam Souther
land took Grand Champion hon
ors followed by Kayla Collis
exhibiting the Reserve Grand
Champion.
Later in the afternoon, the
Northwest Georgia Fair Swine
Show got underway in Calhoun
with Showmanship taking place
first. During the showmanship
classes, several Pickens ex
hibitors did well including Tim-
Timothy Crenshaw placed 2nd in 10th Grade Showmanship.
othy Crenshaw who placed 2nd
in his group and Christina Farron
who came 3rd.
Following the completion of
Showmanship, the exhibitors re
turned to the ring for the weight
and breed classes. Again, Pick
ens County FFA members did
well in these classes with several
of our students having animals
placing in the top five. A.J. Sell
ers’ hog performed the best with
a blue ribbon from the medium
weight classes and, later, a Re
serve Champion Market Hog
plaque.
In the breeding gilt division,
Courtney Chapman took the
Grand Champion honors. Other
FFA members exhibiting swine
included Ashley Rampley, Cody
Qualls, Daniel Mullinax and Jer
emiah Wheeler.

Retired Educators open membership to all
By Lawton Baggs
At its October meeting, the
Pickens County Retired Educa
tors Association adopted several
changes to the organization’s By-
Laws. The changes were de
signed to bring the local
Association’s governance more
in line with that of the Georgia
Retired Educators Association.
Of greatest interest to the public
is the change combining all pre
vious categories of membership
into one. Now only an “Active”
category exist. Any person shar
ing the interests of the Associa
tion (fellowship, support,
service) may become a member.
All members have like privileges
of Association benefits, office
holding, committee assignments,
etc. PCREA actively seeks new
members either from the ranks of
former educational employees or
any other.
Dr. Bill Sloan, executive di
rector of the Georgia Retired Ed
ucators Association, was the
guest and speaker at the meeting
on Oct. 13. Dr. Sloan stressed
membership growth, legislative
concerns, available benefits and
common interests among local
associations around Georgia. He
complimented the Pickens
County Association for its many
community-oriented activities.
PCREA Vice President, Jean Chastain (r) presents apples
to Dr. Bill Sloan of Georgia Retired Educators Association.
Jane Davis and Marge Brown
were welcomed as new mem
bers. Several guests were also in
attendance.
In other matters:
• Treasurer Pat Neville re
minded members to make dona
tions to the organization’s
scholarship fund to finance the
annual teacher preparation schol
arship awarded to a graduating
PHS senior.
• Georgia Maria Cagle re
minded those present of their op
portunity to serve at the Talking
Rock Schoolhouse Museum dur
ing Talking Rock Heritage Days.
(Several members did enjoy such
service on Oct. 15-16.) She also
stated that by Proclamation of
the Governor, Nov. 7, 2010 will
be Retired Educators Day in
Georgia.
• Vivian Murphy announced
that applications are available for
2010 Golden Deed nominations.
PCREA will make that annual
award at its December meeting.
• Bobbie Edge urged mem
bers to be preparing to assist with
preparation for, and participation
in, the next Helen Ruffin Read
ing Bowl.
• Janice Sly announced that
the local Ferst Foundation was
donating books to Hope House.
Books for the entity is one of
PCREA’s ongoing projects.
The November meeting of
PCREA will be on the 10th at
Dunn’s Restaurant. President
Jesse Hunter closed the meeting
by reminding all of the “open
season and open fields” for
membership recruitment.
