Local vet offers advice to pet owners
By Dr. Lyn Lewis, Wayside Animal Hospital
Perceptions vs Reality in Veterinary Medicine
I have a confession to make.
My industry has failed you. For
years and years we have
preached the importance of vac
cines. Vaccines are the main rea
son why you need to visit the
office each year. While vaccines
are very important for a variety
of different diseases, there are
things that are more important in
my eyes.
By far, without a doubt in my
mind, the number one reason for
yearly veterinary visits is the
physical exam. You have proba
bly heard me say in person or in
previous articles that it is in our
pet’s nature to hide illnesses.
They have been domesticated for
hundreds of years but were wild
for thousands more. With wild
animals, the central thought that
goes through their mind nonstop
is that if it shows weakness, it
will be killed. They hide any
sickness, lameness or general
weakness they possibly can. Un
fortunately, our four-legged
friends subscribe to this same
mindset. For the most part, if
they have problems they will try
to hide it. They will do so until
they cannot hide it anymore. At
this point they are extremely sick
and, in the case of liver or kidney
disease, are usually beyond help.
Every day I have clients come
in for vaccines thinking their pet
is healthy and we will notice a
lump, notice a strange odor to the
mouth, strange color to the eyes
or skin or a mild limp. We can
then treat these problems when
they are still mild. The best serv
ice that we can provide for our
clients is to find these things be
fore they are major medical
emergencies. Above all else this
is our job; we have gone through
years of training so that we can
identify the subtle signs of poten
tially serious problems so we can
keep your pets safe and healthy.
Don’t get me wrong, vaccines
are very important in the preven
tion of serious diseases. They
keep our pets and our family safe
from infectious diseases. But I
diagnose a lot more cases of dia
betes, thyroid issues, arthritis,
organ failure and other common
diseases than cases of rabies or
distemper. The physical exam is
why I typically don’t like vaccine
clinics. Sure they are less expen
sive, but we don’t do a physical
exam during the clinics. I am
sure we are missing a lot of po
tential problems and sending
home sick animals.
With the economic recession
we are in, I have also noticed a
lot of people declining the heart-
worm test. I did the math in my
office this week and found that
we have had almost as many
heartworm positive dogs in the
first 7 months of this year than
we did in the last 2 years! The
other scary fact when it comes to
this is that we are testing much
less. Imagine the heartworm pos
itive numbers if we were still
testing the same amount of ani
mals. Heartworms are a horrible
parasite where worms that grow
around 12 inches long live in the
heart and extend out to the lungs.
Over the course of 1-2 years it
causes irreversible damage to the
heart and lungs and death can re
sult in about 2-3 years if left un
treated. This is a horrible
problem in our area that is just
getting worse all the time. A pill
once a month is all you need to
prevent this life changing dis
ease. We will spend the next 2
weeks reviewing heartworms in
depth, so there will be more to
come on this topic.
In closing, remember yearly
vaccinations are important but
the exam is much, much more
important. Also, other tests such
as heartworm testing, blood test-

House number 48, a home
built for a Georgia Marble Com
pany employee, Homer Nix, is
now the home of Mary and Jim
Heaster, 150 New Town St., Tate.
Mary and Jim became resi
dents about nine years ago. Old-
timers called this the “White
House” because this family lived
here for many years. Now we
fondly refer to it as the “Heaster
House.”
The couple has refurbished
the interior of the home as well
as extensive landscaping. Many
foundation plants, balusters on
the front porch, marble walk
ways and patio containers of sea
sonal flowers have been added.
In the 2002 tornado that dev
astated Tate, they lost 30 trees in
cluding a large pecan, white
oaks, red walnuts and pear.
There is a large juniper tree in
front that the White’s planted as
a Christmas tree. It has been well
taken care of with shaping, etc. It
was planted over 50 years ago.
Patio Peach, a beautiful addi
tion, produces small hard
peaches which are not edible and
a Butterfly Magnolia produces
yellow butterflies in the spring.
These two trees grace their side
yard. Scarlet maples have been
planted and the rear view of their
home exhibits a profusion of hy
drangeas and other plants.
Congratulations Mary and
Jim.
