Eastwood mania hits town
Okay, maybe it’s not quite “mania,” but
having Clint Eastwood come to Jasper to film
Trouble With the Curve has been a sizzling
topic of conversation around Jasper. In a place
where western films are standard fare for in
fants and toddlers, and to show we’re not
above a little celebrity fawning, we’re sad
dling up on the Clint bandwagon to have fun
with the fact one of Hollywood’s biggest stal
lions is riding into our little one
horse town.
To celebrate, we suggest that
from now until filming is over
at the end of next week, you
and your friends use as much
Eastwood lingo, diction and
body language as possible in
everyday conversation. Think
“International Talk Like a Pi
rate Day,” only cooler and more
sustained. Try injecting a few
popular Eastwood quotes into
discussions held over dinner or
coffee—and keep in mind the
quotes you use do not have to fit the conver
sation perfectly.
Here are a few examples:
When your young child’s whining has forced
you to dole out punishment, which leads to
said child crying, tell him or her, “You don't
have to worry, Kid. I ain't gonna kill you.
You're the only friend I got.” - Unforgiven,
1992.
If you are eating dinner with your family,
and your teenager gets bored and starts lack
adaisically digging around in their mashed po
tatoes, say, “You see, in this world there's two
kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded
guns and those who dig. You dig.” - The Good,
the Bad and the Ugly, 1966.
If your waitress tells you they are all out of
Splenda and would Sweet n’ Low be okay, you
say, “Go ahead, make my day.” Dirlv Harry,
1971.
If you are at a TEA Party meeting, and the
topic of gun control comes up, ask for the mi
crophone and say, “I have a very strict gun
control policy: if there's a gun around, I want
to be in control of it.” - I’ink Cadillac, 1989.
To heighten the Eastwood frenzy a bit
more, we would also suggest a “Clint Day,”
which would culminate in a Clint Eastwood
look-alike parade. Participants would choose
their favorite Clint character and dress like
him, then mozy on over to the Progress park
ing lot on one of the days he’s in town.
We’ll all spend an hour or so talking to each
other using our best Eastwood
impressions, then line up and
march around the parking lot.
As a finale, we’ll shoot our
guns in the air (because we as
sume 99 percent of participants
will come wearing a poncho,
tattered cowboy hat and hol-
stered pistol) and hope that the
real Clint hears us from Jasper
City Park, where he will be
filming. In all seriousness, if
you have the gumption to dress
up and come by the Progress
office next week, we’ll take
your photo and print it in the paper.
Finally, since no good column on a
celebrity comes without a little gossip, here
are some tidbits we’ve heard from the rumor
mill.
•Eastwood had an entire pallet of Pabst
Blue Ribbon delivered to the set in Daw-
sonville, another Georgia filming location.
•Eastwood and Justin Timberlake (who also
stars) have plans to eat at a local restaurant,
but instead of eating with other patrons, they’ll
rent the entire place out and eat alone.
•Eastwood flew to filming locations in
Dawsonville by helicopter.
•Eastwood is making more money for one
hour of shooting Trouble with the Curve than
we make in two years.
So let’s all put our best boot forward and
make the experience here for Eastwood and
the rest of the cast and crew a good one, be
cause, if we’re honest with ourselves, it’s a
whole lot of fun having movie stars come to
town.

The Essential Bad Attitude
By Alan Gibson
A battle of wits at Apple Mountain
I don’t know if you’ve met Gissix
and Sabrina Lund, Apple Mountain’s
courtly new residents. The elegant
couple was the center of attention at
the recent Newcomer’s Reception.
To Goofy Thunderton, the New
comer’s Reception is an opportunity
to insult people; a gauntlet for others
to run with himself as principle tor
mentor.
“What kind of name is Gissix?”
Goofy demanded of the urbane
Lund.
“I was bom in Luxembourg.”
“Ah yes, famous for its cheese.”
“Not really.”
“I’ve traveled extensively in Eu
rope,” intoned Goofy, who in fact had
done only an Air Force tour of duty
in Iceland
Ventured Sabrina Lund “We get
to Europe every year. What spots are
your favorite, Mr. Thunderton?”
“Iceland” said Goofy.
“Oh?”
‘ ‘Yeah, I like to stay off the beaten
track”

half (never was the expression more
apposite), nudged her husband. “Oh
Goofy, stop it, you’ve never been in
Europe.”
“Iceland is Europe. Right
Skeezix?”
“My name is Gissix! Yes Goofy,
technically you have been in Eu
rope.”
“Seriously, what kind of name is
Gissix?”
“What kind of name is Goofy?”
“Well, actually my name is
Sylvester.”
“Like the pussycat. How charm
ing.” Gissix Limd knew he had
Goofy on the ropes.
“Don’t suppose you were in the
service Gissix?” snarled Goofy.
“82nd Airborne.”
“Oh... Yeah.” Goofy slunk
away as is his wont when bested.
Back in form moments later, he had
joined a new group and was holding
forth on the subject of Bert Parks and
the Miss America Pageant.
The Lund’s watched. “Annoying
fellow, that Goofy,” said Sabrina.
“Del’s nice though.”
“Shall we go dear?” suggested
Gissix.
“Yes, I think we met everyone.
Lovely people. We’ll be happy here,
won’t we Gissix? - Gissix?”
He was preoccupied, watching,
of all things, Goofy Thunderton.
“You know something? He’s ab
solutely right.”
“About what?”
“Bert Parks. Miss America
hasn’t been the same since he left.”
Hie Lund’s are at home on Gam
Mountain Court, two houses away
from Del and Goofy, as real estate
and serendipity would have it.

Film Production in Pickens County
Economic Blockbuster or Flop?
By Gerry Nechvatal
Community Economic
Development Director
By now it is no secret to most
that the new Clint Eastwood,
Justin Timberlake, and Amy
Adams movie Trouble with the
Curve will be filming a scene at
a Jasper location in April. And
while this is very exciting, it has
sparked some debate about the
impact it will have on the com
munity from an economic stand
point.
Taken as a singular occur
rence the value may be relatively
small, as is any two day event or
festival, but the objective is not
to just have this be a one time
event.
Georgia has created a very fa
vorable business environment for
entertainment productions as
well as established programs
such as “Camera Ready” through
the Georgia Department of Eco
nomic Development in order to
recruit these types of opportuni
ties to the State.
These efforts have been very
successful as recently docu
mented in a trade industry publi
cation ranking Georgia #3 in top
places to film, coming in only
behind California and Connecti
cut. Upcoming releases filmed in
Georgia include Joyful Noise,
Jayne Mansfield’s Car and What
to Expect When You ’re Expect
ing. The list of actors is impres
sive with big name stars such as
Dolly Parton, Robert Duval,
Kevin Bacon, Cameron Diaz,
and Jennifer Lopez.
Not wanting to overlook any
potential avenue to increase eco
nomic activity in Pickens Coimty
as well as to support the Georgia
Department of Economic Devel
opment, we chose to participate
early in the Camera Ready pro
gram and as a result the commu
nity has been scouted for several
films.
The State helicopter landed in
Talking Rock last summer with
the Director and Crew scouting a
location to film a new version of
The Great Locomotive Chase,
and in addition, a location in the
county was one of the finalists
for the upcoming “Dirty Danc
ing” remake. We were selected
and several articles have ap

scenes filmed by emerging movie
companies in numerous locations
throughout Jasper and Pickens
County.
So what will result from Trou
ble with the Curve?
Aside from Jasper being pro
moted through talk on Atlanta
radio and being listed as a loca
tion on the Internet Movie Data
Base (IMDB.com), much may be
determined by the experience of
the production company and the
actors.
During the scouting and the
location preparation we have
worked hard to make their expe
riences very positive and hassle-
free so that within the
entertainment industry the repu
tation of Jasper and Pickens
County is that it is a great place
to make movies. On the upcom
ing filming dates it is vital for all
members of the community to do
their part to insure the same.
If you want to someday meet
a star, help make sure their expe
rience is one they wish to repeat,
not forget, so that the future of
film here is an economic block
buster, not a flop.
