Optimist Club of Jasper
Each year the Optimist Club
of Jasper sponsors an Essay Con
test as part of the Optimist Inter
national program. At the local
level, Pickens High School sen
iors and others wrote essays on a
specific topic which this year
was entitled How My Positive
Outlooks Benefits my Commu
nity. These essays were then re
viewed by club members to
determine which essays should
go onto final judging.
We’d like to thank our final
judges from the Pickens County
Retired Educators: Jesse Hunter,
JoAnna Phillips and Lawton
Baggs. Also, the club would like
thank Debbie Roper from PHS
for her involvement and partici
pation in this essay contest.
The top three winners were
invited to the Optimist Club of
Jasper breakfast meeting along
with their parents. Miss Roper
and the three judges. Each win
ner received a check from the
club as well as a medal. The top
club winner then went onto com
pete at the Georgia District level.
The three club winners were:
Drew Bellows, 1st; Mollie Shaw,
2nd; and Makenzie Moore, 3rd.
The three essays were read to the
club members at the meeting and
were very well received. Unfor
tunately, Makenzie Moore was
unable to attend since her family
had moved to Oklahoma.
Special thank you to our
Essay Project Leader, Matt
Moore, for his interest in making
this annual program such a suc
cess.

it even easier to get screened. Our state-of-the-art digital mammography
equipment allows us to provide faster image results with lower radiation doses
and improved patient comfort.

Roger Fitzpatrick, a life
long resident of White County,
announces his candidacy for
the United States Congress in
Georgia’s 9th Congressional
District.
“I am running for Congress
because I love this country, and
I see it going in the wrong di
rection. I want to play a role in
turning this great country
around and making it greater
than it’s ever been. We have so
many issues facing us, and we
need to deal with them head-
on. I do not want our children
and grandchildren bearing the
ever- increasing burden created
by the foolish decisions of our
leaders. I want to be part of the
solution that returns this nation
to the foundational truths upon
which it was established.”
Fitzpatrick, who will retire
from his position as principal
of Mossy Creek Elementary in
White County at the end of this
school year, will be running as
a Republican. “I’m running as
a Republican because it is the
party that most closely aligns
with my conservative views on
how government is supposed to
function. However, as I look at
those currently serving in Con
gress, what I see is a lot of
Roger Fitzpatrick
blaming. The Democrats blame
the Republicans, and the Re
publicans blame the Democ
rats. It’s time to stop blaming
‘the other side’ and realize we
are all Americans first, and we
all need to work together to
solve the problems facing us.”
Roger and his wife Linda,
who is a Christian author, have
been married 26 years and have
two sons. Ryan Hulsey is mar
ried to Ginger Vandiver Hulsey
and they have a daughter
named Avery. Their other son,
Zach Hulsey, has a son named
Cameron. They attend church
at Fellowship of Living Praise
in Clermont.
