are conceited people found

Some of the most narrow
minded people we ever knew
had college degrees, and some
of the most conceited could
barely read and write.

Between the Bookends
By Donna Harrington, Pickens Co. Librarian
What can you do
at the library?
Did you know that you can
send or receive a fax at the li
brary? If you are taking a course
and need to have an exam proc-
tored, we can do that too. Do you
need to scan a document or photo
and send it to an e-mail address?
Would you like to have a card,
photo, map or any other paper
document laminated? Do you
want to set up an e-mail account
or search the Internet? Do you
need to make a copy or have a
copy enlarged? Do you need to
have a place to hold a meeting?
We can do all of these things and
much, much more.
Of course, the library has
books for loaning, but we also
have many other ways you can
access a book. If you want to lis
ten to a book, you can check out
our audio books on CDs or
download them on to your own
device. If you want to read a
book on your pad or e-reader,
you can download it directly on
your device or computer. If you
haven’t been to the library lately,
stop by and see all that we have
to offer.
Scary Stories
Do you have a favorite scary
story that you’d like to share?
Please stop by the Reference
Desk and tell us about your fa
vorite scary book. Responses will
be displayed in the library
throughout the month of October.
Teen Advisory Board
The Teen Advisory Board will
meet on Monday, Oct. 7, at 4
p.m. to discuss the upcoming hol
iday programs. All teens, mem
bers or not, are invited to attend.
Students who volunteer in their
communities have a big advan
tage when applying for college,
scholarships, grants and jobs. It
can be difficult however, for
teens to find ways to serve their
communities. Being a member of
this board is not just a fun way to
gain some community service ex
perience, it also gives teens a
voice in planning the programs
provided by the library for teens.
Anyone interested in becoming a
member of the Teen Advisory
Board or just wants to see what
it’s about is encouraged to attend
this meeting.
Teen Black Tight Party
A program for young adults
hosted by the Pickens County Li
brary’s Teen Advisory Board will
take place on Monday, Oct. 14, at
6:30 p.m. Teens, get ready to
party under black lights at the li
brary! Come wearing neon, bring
a shirt to decorate, and we’ll do
the rest. This program is for teens
in the 6th through 12th grades.
Story Times
Don’t miss Lapsit Story Time
with Miss Olivia on Wednesday,
Oct. 16, at 10:30 a.m. Lapsit
story time is designed for chil
dren ages 1-3. Family Story Time
is also on Wednesday, however it
is in the afternoon at 3. Family
Story Time includes a craft proj
ect and all ages are invited.
Teen Bookmark Design
Contest
It’s not too late for youth in
grades 6 through 12 to participate
in the Pickens County Library’s
3rd Annual Bookmark Design
Contest. Teens can pick up a con
test form at the Pickens County
Library. Entries are due by to
morrow, Friday, Oct. 11. Library
staff will vote on the bookmarks
during Teen Read Week (Oct. 13-
19). The winning bookmark will
be distributed in the library in
November.
Computer/Internet
Classes
We are so excited to be able to
offer small, free computer classes
at the Pickens County Library.
Before we begin setting dates and
times we would like to hear from
you about what you would like to
learn or become more proficient
with. Do you want to set up an e-
mail account? Do you need to
know how to make an attachment
to an e-mail? Do you want to
learn how to find things on the
Internet? We’ll have a “teach me
how to...” sheet at the front desk
and the Reference desk or you
can call us at 706-692-5411 and
let us know what you would like
to know about using a computer.
Classes will be small and you
will be able to learn your own
speed. If you’re a more advanced
user but still have things you’d
like to learn, tell us about that.
We are fortunate that we were
able to purchase the laptops and
a charging station from a grant
from the Pickens County Com
munity Resource Association.
Display of Measuring
Devices
This month our display case
showcases a wonderful selection
of measuring devices from the
tool collection of Mike Ledford.
You’ll find a wide variety of
measuring devices of all shapes
and sizes in this unique display.
Mr. Ledford, who’s been collect
ing tools since the 1970s, says
that they may be used at home,
work, in industry or personal
comfort or safety. This is a dis
play that anyone of any age will
enjoy. Each tool is labeled for its
use, but it’s still fun to try to
guess the use of the item.
