Parent volunteering comes in many shapes and sizes
Fall festivals, box tops, tutoring,
all ways to get involved, says PTO president

Parents of school-aged chil
dren know them well - those pa
pers that come home requesting
fall festival volunteers, movie
night volunteers and participa
tion in Box Tops and cookie
dough fundraisers.
While our urge may be to
crinkle them up and toss them in
the trash, a Wall Street Journal
article says parent involvement is
sometimes a last line of defense
for public schools faced with
budget cuts.
“At schools all over the coun
try parent volunteers are playing
a growing role in saving pro
grams and staff,” it says.
But some parents worry that
getting involved means they will
be berated by PTO organizers
and guilted into volunteering
more than they had planned. A
New York Times article address
the issue in “Frazzled Moms
Push Back Against Volunteer
ing.” Moms, often stay-at-home
moms, talk about volunteering to
the point that it interfered with
their family life.
Hill City’s PTO President
Eileen Steinhauer says it doesn’t
have to be this way. She says
there are a wide variety of op
tions for lending a hand and that
any help - even just a few hours
per year - is appreciated.
“Parents need to know there
are ways they can help that are
not through the events like the
fall festivals or the movie
nights,” she said. “Parents can do
things that utilize their own
unique interests and skills. The
purpose of the PTO is to create a
relationship between the parents,
teachers and staff and they pro
vide activities outside of school,
but there are opportunities inside
schools as well.”
Parents can help with tutor
ing; they can help in the library
or in the classroom; parents can
even volunteer to use their own
interests, such as art, music,
computer skills with students.
Steinhauer said parents who
want to volunteer inside the
classroom must first attend a spe
cial training course that ad
dresses confidentiality and other
issues. At Hill City Elementary
two volunteer classes have been
held this year. Principal Joeta
Youngblood said additional vol
unteer training classes could be
arranged if there is an interest.
Parents can also help sort the
Box Tops, Campbell’s labels,
Coke caps and other fundraising
materials.
“People don’t realize this but
Box Tops are a huge fundraiser
for [the PTO],” she said. “If
everyone did it and turned in
their 10 tops it would be amaz
ing. For every 10 you collect the
school gets $1, but someone has
to sort all those out to send in.”
And of course the big PTO
events such as the fall festivals
that are about to kick off require
a large pool of volunteers to
make them successful.
“I’d say for the fall festival
that coming up we need between
75 to 100 volunteers to make it
run smoothly,” Steinhauer said,
noting that artsy parents are en
couraged to help plan PTO
events like these. “We don’t
want to overwork anyone. We
want parents who volunteer to
actually be able to enjoy part of
the event rather than working the
entire day.
“And really that is the same
for anything in the school, be it
through PTO or not” she added.
“I encourage parents to volunteer
in anyway they are able to, be it
something large or something
smaller. All of it helps.”

As the 2013-14 school term
began, a new LEO club came
into being. The third LEO club
sponsored by Jasper Lions is at

Recognizing its purpose as a

moved into service mode. Work

LEOs and the three adults spent
time after school on Thursday
before the Marble Festival pick

town area. Their efforts enhanced
the city’s appearance for visitors
coming in for the Festival. LEOs
who worked on that project were
7th graders Marshall Hulsey,
Thomas Pinson, Keegan Payne
and Emily Roland. Kelsi Roland

On Saturday of the Marble

Somatatics Therapy Center LLC. is proud to offer a Shimmy Shape Up Class on October 11 th at
6:00 p.m. at the Somatics Therapy Center, LLC. located at 684 W. Church Street In Jasper.
The class will be given by Group Exercise Instructor, Belly Dance Instructor and Professional
Belly Dancer, Jeanne Wells (Aqilah).
The class will feature exercise and basic belly dance moves.
Belly dance exercise offers a fun alternative to your basic workout
routine.
The dance movements are the perfect exercise because they
are low impact and easy to learn. The dance is also a beautiful
ancient art form.
Each move flows with the body’s natural movements with
out any harm to the joints and muscles. The graceful move
ments also strengthen muscles, balance and coordination
while keeping the heart healthy and improving posture. It
strengthens hips and leg bones, and it uses different muscles
than regular aerobics, so it can complement any other exer
cise program.
This exercise is great for all ages and a lot of fun!
We hope to see you at the class!
