Fur Ball celebration is a success
“My client. Clay Shoffer, has
been wronged,” said the Jasper
Elementary School 5th grade stu
dent who acted as council for an
other student who alleged his
teacher, Mrs. Crenshaw, violated
his Fourth Amendment rights.
This was part of the opening
statement of a mock trial held at
the Pickens County Courthouse
last Friday, Oct. 4 after Shoffer
ate chips in class dining the mo
ment of silence on 9/11.
“This is a case where the
teacher took something that
would have ordinarily been a dis
cipline issue and made it a teach
able moment,” Pickens County
Chief Magistrate Judge Allen
Wigington said in an earlier in
terview.
Mrs. Crenshaw’s class has
spent the past month educating
themselves about the Fourth
Amendment and preparing for
the trial.
“He was eating Cool Ranch
Doritos in social studies class
when Mrs. Crenshaw snatched
them out of his hand,” Shoffer’s
council told Judge Wigington
and student jurors. “We aim to
prove that Clay’s Fourth Amend
ment [right] was violated.”
The defense countered.
“Clay claims Mrs. Crenshaw
stole his Cool Ranch Doritos,”
they argued. “Would a reason
able person think this is theft?
The teachers do their job by ‘in
loco parentis’ to teach them char
acter and respect for others.”
The entire 5th grade student
body from JES attended and
heard from witnesses - which in
cluded students, Shoffer’s
mother and JES principal Carlton
Wilson - and saw evidence as it
was presented by the defense.
Mrs. Crenshaw was eventu
ally cleared of the allegation, but
Wigington thanked Shoffer for
“respectfully questioning author
ity.”

Pickens Animal Rescue and
their guests enjoyed a beautiful
evening Sept. 28 at Venue 2 Re
member in West Pickens County.
The evening began with a pictur
esque sunset while the gourmet
hors d’oeuvres were served,
guests dined at the fall decorated
tables set outside on the deck and
around the manicured grounds.
Music and entertainment was
provided by DJ Jessie Giles and
gambling tables with dealers
from O’Brien Productions. The
hours flew by while visiting and
dancing the night away!
The evening’s highlight was
the announcement of the annual
Janie Whitfield Award presented
to the volunteer that dedicated
much time and many talents to
Pickens Animal Rescue. This
year’s recipient is Chantelle Root
who consistently volunteers at
the pet adoptions and spear
headed the Jeep Fest participa
tion for PAR. In 2012, Chantelle
organized and promoted the
Paws & Claws Bike Bash at
Rocco’s and continues to be a
positive role model for all of our
volunteers.
There was also the raffle
drawing for the Apple iPad
which was won by Bryan Mcln-
emey of Jasper. PAR thanks all
of you that participated in the raf
fle this year and making the raf
fle a success.
The evening’s success was
made possible from our generous
sponsors and to the loyal guests
that attend the Fur Ball each year.
