Minister’s Comer
“Sola Gratia - Grace Alone
By Pastor Alan Lutz
Westminster Chapel
Ball Ground
This is a second great excla
mation about the biblical truth of
salvation. We considered “Sola
Scriptura - Scripture Alone!” last
week, and this second slogan
flows directly from it. Ever since
the Reformation 500 years ago,
our Protestant forefathers have
proclaimed this teaching: sinners
are saved by grace alone, through
faith alone, in Jesus Christ alone,
to the glory of God alone! And
it surely is the plain teaching of
God’s Word which so many pas
sages affirm in both the Old and
New Testaments.
“Grace Alone!” stands against
the common notion of salvation
by works alone, or any combina
tion of grace plus works as the
basis of being justified before
God. In His Letter to the Ro
mans, the Apostle Paul affirmed,
“Therefore by the deeds of the
law [personal works or obedi
ence] no flesh will be justified in
His sight, for by the law is the
knowledge of sin... for all have
sinned and fall short of the glory
of God, being justified freely by
His grace through the redemp
tion that is in Christ Jesus ’’ (Ro
mans 3:20,23-24 New King
James Version). And
the Apostle’s well-known state
ment in Ephesians 2:8-9 makes
the same exact point: “For by
grace you have been saved
through faith, and that not of
yourselves; it is the gift of God,
not of works, lest anyone should
boast. ”
Talk to the average person
about his or her concept of salva
tion however, and the vast major
ity will express hope that their
good works will outweigh their
bad ones in God’s balance. Most
will be honest enough to admit
they fall somewhat short, but
with good intentions and a little
help from God they should be
okay. What about you? Do you
expect the Almighty to grade on
the class curve'? Now understand
this, if such were the case, the
Apostle Paul never would have
written what he did! Even more,
Christ Jesus never would have
had to come into this world and
live a perfect life and die a sacri
ficial death in the place of sin
ners! Adding works to grace is
like adding poison to pure spring
water and thinking you won’t
suffer any consequences drink
ing it. There’s no Good News in
that.
The Mount Zion Bible
Church of Pensacola, FL, pub
lishes a free booklet quarterly
called the “Free Grace Broad
caster.” It is a collection of
Christ-centered sermons and ar
ticles (see the website of the
Chapel Library at www.chapel li-
brary.org). Their declared pur
pose is “To humble the pride of
man, to exalt the grace of God in
salvation, and to promote real
holiness in heart and life.” What
a wonderful statement! Grace ex
alted, man humbled, and holiness
promoted. Really think about the
words of “Amazing Grace” the
next time you sing it. “Grace
Alone!” Salvation is all by grace
which is in Christ Jesus! Your
doctrine and life will never be
solidly biblical until you under
stand and apply this truth.

Second Wind
A he first mile was a breeze; the second, profuse perspiration,
followed by another filled with red-faced breathlessness. Two more
to go - seems impossible! Then an unbelievable change occurs. A
floating sensation replaces breathless exhaustion and a seemingly
limitless level of energy returns. With that second wind, the
finish line is achievable. Our lives are similar. Initially, we take
our struggles in stride, for we are naturally hopeful. Then as the
challenges continually stretch out before us, we may wonder if the
finish line is but an impossible dream. Isaiah 40:31 assures us “...
but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they
shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be
weary....” Visit your house of worship this week; learn how God can
be your second wind. The finish line is in sight!
