Happy Ramblers
When we were kids we used
to do this trick that I hadn’t
thought of in years. While think
ing about the only young ones
that we would be having at our
family Christmas tree, I hap
pened to think of this old trick
and thought I would tell the boys
about it. These boys are Jim’s
great-grandsons, six and nine
years old. On a piece of paper we
would print “You have just
bought a chance on Davy Crock
ett’s Mule. Now don’t just sit
around and whine, go get your
dime back like I got mine!” We
would then go up to one of the
grownups and ask if they had a
dime and usually they would feel
around in their pockets and get a
dime and hand to us. You would
then give them the paper. This
would work really well as long
as you didn’t let Mama see what
you were doing and you got you
a dime and the grownup got a
laugh at your trick. Well, I gave
them the paper and told them
how the trick worked and soon
they had about a dollar in
change; some of them gave them
a quarter. The oldest one said,
“We should have said a dollar in
stead of a dime” (see how prices
have gone up!).
Now when we got our dime
we held on to it; however when
these boys left I found their
change just left on the table.
Reckon I was the one that came
out to the good. Bring your kids
on over to visit and I may be able
to teach them a few tricks!
