Your Children Have
Everything They Could Ask For.
Does That Include Life Insurance?
One of the most important things you can give your
children is a life insurance policy for yourself. At Edward
Jones, we meet with you face to face, so we can get to
know you and your entire financial picture. That way, we
can help find the life insurance policy that best suits
your family’s unique needs.
Because all the toys in the world aren't worth as much to
your children as ensuring you'll always be there for them.
Why did you get involved with
KPB?
I got involved because I be
lieve that with a little effort by
everyone, we can make a big dif
ference, particularly in regards to
our impact on our resources. I
lived in Burlington, Vermont for
a few years and was really im
pressed with how waste is han
dled up there. They don't have an
abundance of land for landfills
because of the mountains, so
they have to be very resourceful
in regards to their waste manage
ment. Within the city limits, re
cycling by residents and
businesses was mandatory, and
all restaurants were required to
compost. I worked at a restaurant
and we produced an average of 1
can of trash per day to the 3 cans
of compost and the 5-7 cans of
recycling. The city then
processed the compost, bagged
it, and sold it back to the commu
nity for their gardens. The recy
cling services in Pickens County
are very impressive, but there's
always room to do more and
joining KPB gave me the oppor
In addition to your leadership
role at KPB you founded the
non-profits Sustainable Pick
ens and Edible Jasper, and
built a building out of all-recy-
eled materials. Your car is also
powered by reclaimed veg
etable oil. When and why did
conservation become such a
guiding principle in your life?
I can't point to one moment
that piqued my interest in reduc
ing my impact on our environ
ment. It's an ever-evolving
interest that grows and changes
with the people I meet and the
things I learn. Growing up, the
kids on my street and I were al
ways outside. My parents sent
me to places like the Chatta
hoochee Nature Center and Sc-
iTrek in the summers for their
camps. My life has always been
filled with an interesting cast of
characters who think “out of the
box,” showing me that there's al
ways different ways to achieve a
goal. Through these various in
fluences, I became increasingly
aware of our impact and that we
have options. Mostly though, I
I have lots of goals, but they
all revolve around one philoso
phy.... to live with integrity and
leave a positive impact on the
world around me. My goals in
clude increasing the educational
programs I offer through Educa
tional Excursions, KPB, and the
other organizations I work with,
building additional structures
with reclaimed materials and en
ergy independence, increasing
my food production and other
gardens, and many more. But
they all focus on living with in
tegrity and leaving a positive im
pact.
What’s on your play list right
now?
My play list would confuse
most people with it's random
ness. Some of my favorites are
Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Gorillaz,
David Guetta, Dido, U2, Tiesto,
Outkast, Paul Simon, and the
Cure.
What are you most proud of?
I don't think there's one thing
that I'm most proud of. I feel like
my life has been a series of small
accomplishments that will hope

The Good Samaritan Health
& Wellness Center in Jasper is
sponsoring a free eight-hour
course to help those who en
counter a person in a mental or
emotional crisis, an occurrence
more likely to happen than en
countering a heart attack victim.
Mental disorders are more
common than heart disease and
cancer combined. The program
is designed to help those who
complete the course to assist per
sons with mental health needs
and connect them to support and
care.
Caring citizens, first respon
ders, health workers, faith lead
ers, school and business leaders
are encouraged to pursue this
type of training.
The Holy Family Episcopal
Church on Griffith Road in
Jasper is hosting the training ses

fully lead to something amaz
ingly great. But if not, my life so
far has treated me right. I'm sat
isfied knowing that I've worked
hard as I've moved from one
thing to the next and that hope
fully I've left a positive wake.
Who inspires you?
What accomplishments has
Keep Pickens Beautiful made
over the last year, during your
term as president?
KPB has always been in
volved in the community in a va
riety of ways, especially helping
with recycling at events and
other activities throughout the
county to reduce the volume of
waste headed for the landfill.
However, I felt like there were
many events we were not present
at that could have used our help.
One of my goals was to assist
with recycling at every event in
the county. I knew this was a
lofty aspiration, so we did the
best we could and helped with
more than 25 events. Next year I
hope we increase that number.
Almost every activity produces
waste, so we'd like to help divert
the recyclables away from the
landfill.
What are some things KPB
does most people don’t know
about?
I hope folks know about all
our activities. One of the chal
lenges we've had in the past has
been spreading information
about what we do and who we
are, but we've increased the num
ber of articles in the Progress and
have also started a Facebook
page to keep the community in
formed.

tunity to be involved with this as
pect of the community.
Where do you hope to see KPB
in five years?
In five years I hope KPB will
have an even greater impact in
our county in regards to recy
cling efforts, educational pro
grams and beautification
projects. I hope more members
of the community will get in
volved with our projects, partic
ularly the schools and youth
groups.
realized that it's all about per
sonal choices and living respon
sibly and respectfully, so if I
wanted to encourage people to
reduce their footprint I'd have to
lead by example. I don't expect
everyone to drive a veggie-oil
powered car, or to construct their
structures from reclaimed mate
rials, but if I did it myself at least
I'd show them that it's possible.
It might take a little more effort,
but in the end it's that much more
satisfying.
What are some of your per
sonal long-term goals?
The people who inspire me
most are those who set a goal and
work towards it with fierce deter
mination. This could be an ath
lete who aspires to get to the
Olympics, or it could be a stu
dent trying to reach their target
grade, or it could be a baby tak
ing its first steps and anxiously
wanting to walk. People who
give it their 'all' to achieve their
goals are my inspiration.
Tell us your guilty pleasures?
Chocolate! I know that's not
an original or a very exciting
guilty pleasure, but it's definitely
at the top of my list. Oh, and
peanut better. Chocolate and
peanut butter are the epitome of
my indulgences...together or sep
arate, it doesn't matter. Prefer
ably dark, fair-traded chocolate
and crunchy peanut butter.
