City accepts bid for first phase
of water system improvements
After accepting bids from five
contractors, Hydrosystems & En
vironmental will help get the city
of Jasper started on phase one of
a $400,000 project which will
improve the city’s water system.
The Milledgeville based
drilling company offered the
lowest bid to the city to develop
four wells which will ultimately
help supplement the city’s pres
ent sole source of raw water, the
Cove Creek pumping station.
The first well will be placed
near the abandoned marble mines
near Cove Creek and hopefully
tap into a 300,000,000 gallon
reservoir, which will be used
strictly for drought protection.
The remaining three wells
will be placed in various areas
around the city including near
City Hall, the intersection of
Hood and Lumber Company
roads and near the city’s water
treatment plant on Wood Lane.
Additionally the city hopes to
install a booster pumping station
between Jasper and Talking Rock
to increase pressure to customers
on the north end of the system.
Painting and refinement of the
100,000 gallon water tank near
the Woodbridge Inn is also slated
for upgrade.
Registry identifies convicted
child molesters
Since July 1, four people on
parole for child molestation have
moved into Pickens County.
In July, a law passed by the
state legislature went into effect
requiring paroled child sex of
fenders to give their name and
address to the local sheriff’s [of
fice] and school board.
Pickens County Sheriff’s
Deputy Rebecca Boone said she
applauds the new state law be
cause it will help parents keep
their kids safe.

Story Express visits Pickens Pre-K/Head Start to deliver books to children
Submitted by
Abigail Crawford
Programs Coordinator
On December 19, volunteers
from The Craddock Center and
the Big Canoe Knit2Gether
group traveled to Tate, Ga., to
give free new books and hand
knit hats to children at Pickens
County Pre-K/Head Start. Books
are donated throughout the year
by individuals, churches and or
ganizations from all over the
country. Hand-knit hats are made
and then given to the Center by
volunteers as close as Ellijay and
as far away as Texas.
Children climb aboard the
Story Express and pick a book
for themselves from an age-ap
propriate selection of literature
that they will then be able to take
home and keep. The Story Ex
press visited all classes at Pick
ens Pre-K/Head Start and gave
out more than 140 books and knit
hats.
The Story Express is a corner
stone program of The Craddock
Center, which serves Southern
Appalachian children in nine
counties in Georgia, Tennessee
and North Carolina. The program
consists of a customized van
filled with books that visits each
of the Center’s 15 schools three
times during each school year,
giving each child a new book to
keep with every visit. This was
the second visit of the 2014-15
school year. The Story Express
provided children with over
4,000 books in 2013.

group helps a young boy pick
