Grading underway for Tate Depot relocation

Midday Thursday truckloads
of dirt were being hauled to the
new site of the Tate Depot, which
will be moved directly across
Highway 53 and renovated using
GDOT funding.
The project was awarded
$1.2 million through GDOT’s
Transportation Enhancement
Grant.
After receiving bids for the
project at over $1 million above
the $1.2 million available
through GDOT grants, the
county downsized renovations to
include just the relocation of the
building and renovation of the
exterior. The county has no plans
to spend more money on the
project in the future and has no
plans for how the building will
be used, but has called for sup
port from the community to com
plete the interior.
According to Ben Carter, ar
chitect with Carter Watkins As
sociates Architects, Inc, the
entire project should take 14
weeks to complete. Preparations
to move the building across the
highway will take approximately
one month. Preparation includes
removing and storing the tile
roof and raising the depot to
place steel I Beams underneath
the structure.
“A remote control track
crawler will be placed under
neath the depot and it will be
moved across the street with this
remote control crawler device,”
Carver said. “Meanwhile the site
is being prepared for the depot’s
new home.”
There are also special precau
tions being made to preserve the
building’s historicity.
“The project is federally
funded and the plans and work
are reviewed and approved by
the Georgia Department of Nat
ural Resources Historic Preser
vation Division,” Carver said.
“We must follow the Federal
Secretary of Interior standards
guidelines for historic preserva
tion.”
GDOT Area Engineer Sam
Wheeler said windows will be
removed, refurbished and rein
stalled, but that the roof tiles will
be shrink wrapped, stored and re
placed with asphalt shingles.
“There were a lot of those
tiles that were damaged,”
Wheeler said. “They were old
and finding and replacing them is
nearly impossible. The asphalt
shingles pass muster with the
historical society.”
Crews with Haithcock Grading & Paving spent Thursday, Jan. 22 bringing in loads of dirt at the future site of the historic
Tate Depot.
A Mardi Gras Valentine for 2015

Farce of Nature has audience gasping
Tyler Roper (Carmine) and Leah Chapman (Lola) in Farce
of Nature which is stuffed with witty seasoning, according to
early reviews.
A stern Pat Northcutt (Maxie) the cherry atop this comic
confection. The show continues through February 8th at the
Tater Patch Theatre.

Never tell D. Gene (Alex Nawrocki)
to “Fish!” Never, ever tell him to “Shut
up!” And never, never, ever tell him to
“Shut up and fish!” He is under post-hyp
notic suggestion and the unimaginable
happens on the Tater Patch stage. When
he unbuckles his belt the audience actu
ally gasps before they laugh.
The entire play takes place in a crusty
fishing camp in the dense woods of
Arkansas - charmingly misunderstood as
Mississippi by gum-chewing New Jersey
native Lola (Leah Chapman).
Lust, lies and laughs bloom as refresh
ing as a breath of Southern honeysuckle
in January. For example:
“Oh! I gotta change clothes and lose
15 pounds!” Jenna’s (Dezarea Brown)
comments after finding out her
boyfriend, which she has not seen in 6
months, is coming home - in an hour.
The veteran actors and actresses, all
blessed with superb theatrical timing,
have joined talents to present a motley
collection of one-liners.
The cherry atop of this comic confec
tion has to be Pat Northcutt (Maxie) who
plays an ex-cop turned camp waitress.
Maxie power-struts with her menacing
revolver sans bullets, inhales pretzels like
a hog in a trough and presents to the au
dience true hilarious bravery.
Tater Patch is delighted to welcome
Carlene Archer (Wanelle), a renowned
thespian and musician making her Tater
Patch debut with this production.
Farce of Nature is intended to be
funny. It works. It is. Stuffed with witty
seasoning, the flawed characters are
sometimes at cross purposes, but the final
scene proves lovey-dovey and has the
best men winning their girl and kissing
problems goodbye.
It is invigorating local entertainment.
Those dedicated to the Tater Patch Play
ers have worked behind the scenes for
decades. They constantly bring total per
fection of performance in their elegant
new theater.
There were no yawns in the audience
- quite a few gasps. At the finale, grateful
theater-goers gave a standing ovation to
the volunteer cast, lighting technicians,
directors, ushers and servers after this
premier performance Friday, January 24.
January 30, 31 and February 1, 6, 7
and 8 are the remaining magic dates to
see two hours for only $15. Worth every
penny! Worth every gasp!
