Cornerstone
OK! We get it! We come to
church to be part of the body of
Christ and we are to BE who
God has supernaturally created
us, through salvation’s new cre
ation.
What I DO, as a Christian,
will come out of the giftedness
that we all receive from God.
We, as Christians, are unique and
special to our mission in Pickens
County. This Sunday we want to
answer this question, “How spe
cial are you to God’s plan in
Pickens County?”
A Christian friend said this to
me yesterday: “It’s time to have
beans and potato messages.”
Now he does not attend Corner
stone, but we do keep to the ba
sics. Pull up a chair this Sunday
and feed on God’s Word, the
Bible. We will conclude the se
ries on Romans 12:3-8 and I
Corinthians 12:12-31.
Check us out at www. comer
stonechurchofjasper.com. Join us
this Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Causal
dress is expected and our loca
tion is just off Camp Road, 1/2
mile from Roper Park.

degree at Emory University in
Hebrew Bible. After teaching
three years at BirminghamSouth-

to Emory in 1967 to join the fac

Graduate Division of Religion
(Emory’s PhD program in Reli

History as archaeologist later
that year, and retired from Fem
bank in 2009. Dr. Miller com

History, Archaeology and Bibli

At Candler, his courses fo

biblical times. Among archaeol

for directing an archaeological
survey of the region of ancient
Moab (in present-day Jordan).
The results of this survey, con

best known for books and arti

“Palestine during the Bronze
Age” for The Biblical World, a
two-volume set edited by John

articles include “Syria: Land of

Archaeology and “History or

Talking Rock First Baptist
Church
In his letter in I Corinthians
2:1-12, Paul gave hope to those
who heard his message and to
us today as he wrote, “I didn’t
speak about God’s mystery as if
it were some kind of brilliant
message or wisdom. While I
was with you, I decided to deal
with only one subject-Jesus
Christ, who was crucified.
When I came to you, I was
weak and afraid. I didn’t speak
with persuasive words. I spoke
my message with a show of
spiritual power so that your
faith would not be based on
human wisdom but on God’s
power. However, we do use
wisdom to speak to those who
are mature. It is a wisdom that
doesn't belong to this world or
to the rulers of this world who
are in power today and gone to
morrow. We speak about the
mystery of God’s wisdom. It is
a wisdom that has been hidden,
which God had planned for our
glory before the world began.
Not one of the mlers of this
world has known it. If they had,
they wouldn’t have crucified
the Lord of Glory. But as Scrip
ture says: ‘No eye has seen, no
ear has heard, and no mind has
imagined the things that God
has prepared for those who love
him.’ God has revealed those
things to us by his Spirit. The
Spirit searches everything, es
pecially the deep things of God.
After all, who knows every
thing about a person except that
person’s own spirit? In the same
way, no one has known every
thing about God except God’s
Spirit. Now, we didn’t receive
the spirit that belongs to the
world. Instead, we received the
Spirit who comes from God so
that we could know the things
which God has freely given us.”
The King James version is
worded a little differently but
has the same meaning.
1 Corinthians 2:1 -12 - And I,
brethren, when I came to you,
came not with excellency of
speech or of wisdom, declaring
unto you the testimony of God.
For I determined not to know
any thing among you, save
Jesus Christ, and him crucified.
And I was with you in weakness,
and in fear, and in much trem
bling. And my speech and my
preaching was not with enticing
words of man’s wisdom, but in
demonstration of the Spirit and
of power: That your faith
should not stand in the wisdom
of men, but in the power of God.
Howbeit we speak wisdom
among them that are perfect:
yet not the wisdom of this
world, nor of the princes of this
world, that come to nought: But
we speak the wisdom of God in
a mystery, even the hidden wis
dom, which God ordained be
fore the world unto our glory’:
Which none of the princes of
this world knew: for had they
known it, they would not have
crucified the Lord of glory. But
as it is written, Eye hath not
seen, nor ear heard, neither
have entered into the heart of
man, the things which God hath
preparedfor them that love him.
But God hath revealed them
unto us by his Spirit: for the
Spirit searcheth all things, yea,
the deep things of God. For
what man knoweth the things of
a man, save the spirit of man
which is in him? even so the
things of God knoweth no man,
but the Spirit of God. Now we
have received, not the spirit of
the world, but the spirit which
is of God; that we might know
the things that are freely given
to us of God.
Live in hope. I may not have
seen or heard, but I know He
has prepared things for me be
cause I love Him!

TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE

n today’s uncertain society people have learned to be more
cautious, especially of offers too good to be true. Anxiety and
hidden agendas dot our social landscape, how do we know who
to trust? Who will tell us the truth? Where are we really safe? We
should not and need not live in fear. God knows our concerns today.
His way is the Truth, we have a friend and guardian in Him. Find
protection in God’s house each week, study His Word and rest your
fears in the strength of unfailing wisdom.
