As reported recently in the
Pickens County Progress, expos
ing students to new experiences
is one of the main reasons behind
the establishment of the new
Youth Leadership Class at the
Mountain Education Charter
High School in Jasper.
According to Patsy Jordan,
the instructor for the new course,
the class recently took their first
field trip.
The Pickens County Adult
Detention Center hosted the stu
dents with a teaching session and
guided tour of the jail by Captain
Frank Reynolds and Lieutenant
Tyrone Duke.
Before the actual tour of the
detention facility, students partic
ipated in a question and answer
session. Captain Reynolds ex
plained how the government, the
constitution and the sheriff’s de
partment work hand in hand.
Captain Reynolds also advised
the students to be sure they know
who their friends are, because
they may suffer serious conse
quences by associating with the
wrong people.
During the guided tour, the
first stop was the control room.
The students were amazed at
how a person sitting behind a
computer screen can observe all
the minor details of what is hap
pening inside the prison walls.
The class was also treated to a
tour of the tower where they
could look down into the pods,
the actual living quarters of the
Captain Frank Reynolds addressing Mountain Education students.
inmates. Other highlights in
cluded visits to the laundry and
cafeteria where the students saw
inmates on work details as well
as the medical unit where they
met with the on-duty nurse.
At the end of the tour, Sheriff
Donnie Craig engaged the stu
dents in conversation and an
swered further questions. Ms.
Jordan thanked Sheriff Craig for
offering the students the oppor
tunity to see the detention facility
first hand and expressed her ap
preciation to the sheriff for his
support for all the students at the

High School. Sheriff Craig is re
sponsible for instituting a Skype
program to enable Mountain Ed.
students, if they are unfortunate
enough to find themselves incar
cerated, to continue their educa
tions while serving their time in
jail.
Jordan said, “The field trip
was very informative. It was an
eye-opening experience for the
students.” All of the students
