We see the products of Roys ton almost every day of our lives but do not realize they come See Royston, Page 16A Fundraising in roads under council review No street fundraisers while Jasper officials study safety issues By Angela Reinhardt Staff writer areinhardt@pickensprogress.com Civic organizations, sports teams and other groups will not be permitted to hold fundraisers on Jasper streets until the city council works out a new permitting policy. The new policy that will govern groups holding out boots, selling donuts or doing other things to solicit funds on city roads is expected to be in place before the spring sports season. The move to suspend issuance of street fundraising permits comes after city leaders were warned that by allowing groups to stand in roadways Jasper could be held liable if a person was hit by a passing motorist. “Traffic is not like it was 10 years ago,” Jasper Police Chief Greg Lovell said. The injured bird was rescued from Highway 515 after being hit by a car. By Christie Pool Staff writer christie@pickensprogress.com The blue heron that Pick ens sheriff deputies rescued after it was hit by a car on Hwy. 515 Thursday is “hang ing in there,” according to a volunteer with the Georgia Wildlife Rehabilitation Sanc tuary in Ellijay. Jonathan Cylke volunteers with the rehabilitation center and said the heron was in a state of shock when deputies pulled her from the bustling highway. “She had been hit by a car and had a hurt wing,” Cylke said. “She was in shock when we picked her up from the jail. She’s doing ok right now.” Cylke said the female heron has a 70 percent chance of recovery. “We are treating her with medication and trying to rehab her injury,” he said. Great blue herons are the largest North American heron and live near open water and in wetlands. After viewing the video of officers rescuing the heron, local veterinarian Dr. Lyn Lewis said there was no doubt it was an unwell bird. “No bird is going to stand there and let you pick it up,” Dr. Lewis said of the heron shown placidly allowing a deputy to pick her up and See Heron, Page 15A Veterans Memorial Park in the works Vet. groups meet to strengthen ties By Angela Reinhardt Staff writer areinhardt@pickensprogress.com For the men and women sitting around this particular table on this particular day, honoring veterans is serious business. Representatives of local veterans groups weren’t in uniform, but hats and sweaters with seals gave affiliations away. The Disabled American Veterans, the American Le gion and the Marine Corps League were all bellied up, as well as the Jasper Lions Club - the civic group that has or ganized the Veterans Day pa rade for years - and the webmaster for a Pickens County veterans website, www.pickenscountyveter- ans.com.
