Global Impact Celebration
returns to Jasper UMC
By Suellen Reitz
Jasper United Methodist
Church will be opening their
doors again this weekend, Febru
ary 6-8, for their 3rd Annual
Global Impact Celebration. The
name, Global Impact Celebra
tion, is all about people helping
people and “celebrating” the
gathering of all who have an
swered God’s call to spread His
word in love and action, both
here and around the world.
Missionaries don’t all come from
the far corners of the world.
Many are called to serve right
here in Pickens County. There
will be 19 different mission
groups represented, giving you
the perfect opportunity to meet
those serving internationally, na
tionally, regionally, and our own
neighbors who have committed
to one of the dozens of charitable
organizations of Pickens County.
Each representative has a story to
share as they answer your ques
tions on how and why they do
what they do.
Senior pastor Chip Wilson be
lieves everyone should make
plans to attend at least part of the
GIC weekend if they have ever
had any thoughts about serving
others. “Each year we have new
missionary representatives as
well as many who are returning,”
he said. “If you’ve come to past
GIC functions, come back to get
updates from those you’ve met.
It can be very rewarding to see
positive change.”
The celebration has been con
densed this year to consist of
only 3 days, but none of the fa
vorite activities will be missing.
Co-Chair Dex Phillips explains
the change saying, “We have
combined our international ban
quet with the keynote speaker.
That way, everyone can enjoy
the delicious meal and hear the
message that our theme is based
upon. Touch Our Community,
Reach Our World. We want to
reach as many folks as we can.
That is the most important part of
this weekend... getting folks to
be here. God will take care of
everything else.”
Friday night’s activities begin
at 5 p.m. outside of the fellow
ship hall of JUMC. Guests will
have the opportunity to meet
each of the 19 mission represen
tatives at their display table.
There will be ample time to min
gle with the missionaries before
the international banquet begins
at 6:30. Missionaries will be sit
ting at different tables to allow
even more interaction. Follow
ing the delicious meal catered by
Madeline’s, the children will
leave for their own activities
while our keynote speaker. Rev.
Dr. Richard Hunter, speaks from
his heart.
Hunter, senior minister from
Sugar Hill UMC, is a down to
earth speaker that truly has a
heart for missions. He and his
church congregation are very ac
tive in community support activ
ities of Sugar Hill and he has
served as a teacher in the Inter
national Leadership Institute
helping others learn how to
spread God’s word. His other
loves in life are family, garden
ing and fishing.
Saturday is all about small
breakout groups at the fellowship
hall, allowing attendee’s even
more one-on-one time with the
mission reps. The day starts at 8
for a men’s breakfast, then youth

The Resurrection -
What Does It
Mean?
By Rev. Ben Laughlin
Fellowship Presbyterian
Church (ECO)
Lent is about to start. The
question for many today is this:
What is Lent? Lent is the first
part of the Easter cycle of the
Christian Church. The Easter
cycle includes Lent, Easter, and
Pentecost.
We read in the Old Testa
ment and the New Testament
how the people of ancient Israel
observed a variety of yearly fes
tivals related to the agriculture
that structured their lives and to
the events in their history that
constituted their story as a peo
ple.
Jesus was crucified at
Passover time, when Jews were
commemorating how God had
delivered their ancestors from
slavery in Egypt, brought them
safely through the Red Sea and
made them a free people. These
early people realized that they
too had been delivered by God
and were no longer slaves to sin
and death.
They had been made free
people through the suffering,
death and resurrection of Christ.
Referring to the lamb that was
sacrificed at Passover, the
Apostle Paul wrote:
“Cleanse out the old leaven
that you may be a new lump, as
you really are unleavened. For
Christ, our paschal lamb has
been sacrificed. Let us, there
fore, celebrate the festival, not
with old leaven, the leaven of
malice and evil, but with the un
leavened bread of sincerity and
truth (1 Cor. 5:7-8 RSV).
During Lent we remember
that old Jewish event of deliver
ance was now made completely
new in Jesus Christ. Slavery to
sin and death will no longer
bind the souls of God’s people.
The theology of the Easter
cycle cannot be understood
without first understanding that
Christ was the ultimate sacrifice
for our sins. Jesus Christ is
Savior and Lord!
Lent is important for many
reasons. The most important of
which is our calling as Disciples
of Jesus Christ. When we con
fess Jesus as Lord and Savior
and invite Him into our hearts
we enter into a covenant rela
tionship with God. God has
many hopes and expectations of
His disciples.
The most important I believe
is that we are called to be “The
hands andfeet of Jesus Christ! ”
As such we are signs of God’s
Kingdom in this world. With
Lent so begins our annual jour
ney for remembrance in the
Easter cycle of the church.
On Ash Wednesday, for
many Christian traditions, Ash
Wednesday is marked by a
solemn worship service of re
pentance. Ash Wednesday is a
day of penitence which marks
the beginning of Lent - the 40
days of preparation for the
Passover celebrations of Easter.
So there you have a very
brief discussion of the Christian
Church’s liturgical season of
Lent. This year Ash Wednesday
occurs on February 18.
Next week I will begin to
share with you a Lenten devo
tion that I have written for my
church’s annual Lenten Devo
tion. My devotion will be fo
cused on Easter Sunday.
Take care and God bless.
meet for a 10 a.m. brunch in a
member’s home. Ladies then will
enjoy a lunch at noon. All meals,
including the banquet are dona
tions only. Saturday night the
small groups will gather in
homes at 6 p.m. for what some
consider being the most reward
ing break out period. Those not
belonging to a small group will
be welcomed at the church at the
same time. Those attending the
small group at church will have
planned activities and pizza for
the kids. Adults should bring
their favorite finger foods to
share.
Sunday school classes at
JUMC will have a representative
to offer more information and an
swer any remaining questions.
All church services, 8:30,11 and
the newly created contemporary
service at 9:45 will hear Rev. Dr.
Joy Griffin share her faith prom
ise message on how our faith can
grow. Griffin and her husband,
Rev. Dr. Wes Griffin, are co
founders of the International
Leadership Institute, which is
headquartered in Carrollton, Ga.
Their training is designed on the
principal of multiplication... we
teach, you teach, and those you
have taught, then go and do like
wise.
Many at JUMC are new to the
mission field. Others, like Marty
Beaver, co-chair for the GIC, has
had a heart for missions for over
20 years. “There is a core group
of members here at JUMC that
have been praying a long time
for the church to feel that same
passion and desire to serve the
Lord. To have a mission’s heart
is His (God) dream, not just ours.
His desire is for all of us to be
there for one another.”
Pastor Chip agrees. “Initially,
there were only a few involved
and our budget for missions was
meager at best,” he explained. “I
believe that was not because of
lack of interest, but simply not
knowing how to help. Now the
church has come alive with vol
unteers signing up for foreign
and stateside missions. Even
more are becoming active in our
local mission opportunities. It is
so exciting to see the growth
within JUMC in the area of mis
sions since our first GIC event
three years ago. We can really
see how being involved is start
ing to make a difference.”
Come join JUMC and the
Pickens community as they learn
how they can help and then...
commit to doing it! Whether it
be by volunteering your time, do
nation of necessary funds or
praying for those who go... all
elements are necessary to have a
successful mission goal. There is
so many ways people can help
people who need your help.
Pickens County truly does care
for its own and you can make it
even better.

GIVE & TAKE
JL he Bible tells us to give
our problems to God, but
are we giving Him our
problems or lending them,
only to take them back
when He doesn’t give us a
quick answer or the answer
that we are expecting? Are
we really letting go and
trusting in His response?
When we visit God’s house
each week, we become
increasingly aware of His
Spirit at work in our lives.
We can come to know
peace and trust Him with
our every care, knowing
that He will guide us in the
right direction. Learn how
to give God your problems
and take Him at His Word.
