The Jasper Merchant’s As
sociation and American Le
gion Post #149 have already
raised nearly $8,000 to buy
new bullet-proof vests for the
Jasper Police Department,
but to outfit the entire divi
sion they need a little more
help from the community.
“We’re $3,500 short,” said
JMA member Evelyn
Williams who has taken lead
of the effort along with Vir
ginia Painter, also of JMA.
“We chose Jasper police be
cause those vests are seven
years old and they didn’t
have the funds to update
them.”
Total cost for the 15 vests
is $11,000.
Williams said all dona
tions are tax-deductible. A
plaque that displays the po
lice department will be made
with the names of donors and
displayed at the Jasper sta
tion.
“We are also going to have
a plaque made in memory of
Maxine Moore, so if some
one wants to make a donation
in her honor they can do that,
too.”
Checks should be made to
the American Legion Post
#149 with “Jasper Police De
partment Fundraiser” on the
notes line.
Donations can be mailed
to American Legion Post
#149, P.O. Box 477, Jasper,
Ga. 30143.

dollar amount on the ability to
hear again. With this in mind, we
accept most major insurance
plans as well as offer a variety of
payment options. Come see us at

National Park improvements
NE Georgia to benefit from
federal land sale
Recently, Congressman Doug
Collins (GA-09) introduced the
Chattahoochee-Oconee National
Forest Land Adjustment Act to
facilitate transfer of under-used
U.S. Forest Service lands to pri
vate hands, a move to boost
Northeast Georgia’s recreation
and economy.
“This bill would eliminate
federal waste, saving taxpayer
money, and provide more oppor
tunities to Georgians from
around the state to enjoy our
beautiful region,” said the Ninth
District Republican.
Under Rep. Collins’ bill, H.R.
470, the Forest Service would
sell remote tracts at market value
and buy others with the proceeds,
consolidating holdings to im
prove fishing, hunting and hik
ing. Nearby counties, currently
providing unreimbursed services
to federal lands, would also
begin to collect tax revenue from
new private owners.
The Forest Service ap
proached conservation groups
with its proposal to unload re
mote tracts of Georgia’s lone na
tional forest in 2014. “This is a
win at both the state and local
levels,” explained Rep. Collins.
“It’s an economic win, too, that
will create investment and jobs.”
The Outdoor Industry Associ
ation has valued consumer
spending on outdoor activities in
Georgia at $23.3 billion and re
lated wages and salaries at $7 bil
lion. The state’s consumer
spending on outdoor activity
ranks 5th nationally.
