John Cagle
John Coker Cagle passed
away on Wednesday, February 4,
2015, at his Gainesville resi
dence at the age of 89.
He is survived by his wife,
Eliza Athon Cagle; daughter,
Tami Bond; and son, John Athon
Cagle (wife Nancy); brother,
Robert A. “Bob” Cagle; and
grandson, Zachery Stanfield
(wife Ana). Six great-grandchil
dren and several nieces and
nephews also survive. Mr. Cagle
was preceded in death by his par
ents, Rosia and Olen Cagle, Sr.;
an infant son, Ken Athon Cagle;
brother, Bill Cagle; sister, Ruth
Cagle Lay; and many friends.
Mr. Cagle graduated from
Pickens County School and
served in the
U.S. Navy
during
World War
II. He gradu
ated from Cincinnati School of
Mortuary Science. He, his father
and brother opened Cagle Fu
neral Home in May of 1949. In
1957, John was appointed Post
master of Jasper, Ga. He became
very active in bettering the com
munity and county. He was ac
tive in the Methodist Church,
Boy Scouts, Lions Club, Ma
sons, Shriners, chairman of In
dustrial Development, bringing
many opportunities to Pickens
County and chairman of Hospital
Authority.
After Doctors C.J. Roper and
E.A. Roper planned to close
Roper Hospital, John Immedi
ately began his plea to the citi
zens to vote for a hospital to be
built. He went to community
centers to show plans, explaining
how with the Federal Hill-Burton
Act, the State and Pickens
County could make this hospital
a dream come true. John worked
diligently as Chairman of the
Board. You would have thought
he was the “builder” because he
was on the site more than at
home! But his dream came true!
Doctors have flocked to our area
because of his dream.
John was appointed Postmas
ter at Jasper in 1957. He was ap
pointed Postmaster of
Gainesville, Ga., in 1973. In
1977 he was promoted to Sec
tional Center manager at
Raleigh, N.C. During this time,
he was sent to Birmingham, Al.,
and Ft. Lauderdale, FI. In 1980,
he served as Acting district man
ager of the greater Wisconsin
District in Milwaukee Wiscon
sin. Mr. Cagle ended his postal
career in 1985 as district man
ager of the state of Oklahoma
and Pan-Handle Texas. His man
agement responsibilities con
sisted of 764 US Post Offices and
11,000 employees.
John was a “giver” not a
“taker,” and to the end he proved
that by offering his body to
Emory University.
A Memorial service was held
Sunday, February 8, at 3 p.m. in
the Chapel of Little & Davenport
Funeral Home. The family re
ceived friends from 1:30 p.m.
until 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers,
memorial contributions can be

Georgia Medical Center, 2150
