Minister’s Comer
“The Resurrection
What does it mean?
By Rev. Ben Laughlin
Fellowship Presbyterian
Church (ECO)
Last week we learned about
the liturgical season of Lent
which is observed in the Chris
tian Church every year about
this time. We learned that Lent
is one part of the Easter cycle
which consists of Lent, Easter
and Pentecost. Lent is a time to
reflect on our personal faith
journey. It is a time for cleans
ing of body, mind and spirit in
preparation for the events of
Holy Week. Lent is a time of
preparation leading us to Good
Friday when Jesus was cruci
fied dead and buried. And then
on the third day (Easter) Jesus
was raised from the dead by
God the Father.
There is a lot of theology
contained in these events -all of
which are recorded in the Bible
(God’s Word). There is far too
much theology and teaching for
me to tackle in these brief writ
ings. To learn more about Jesus
I encourage you to find a church
where you can explore a per
sonal relationship with Jesus
Christ.
Christians around the world will
celebrate Easter Sunday April
5th this year. Easter is the day
that we celebrate the resurrec
tion of our Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ. Young and old
alike will be wearing their finest
clothes and attending church.
Perhaps in your family it is a
time to gather with family for
your annual Easter egg hunt and
a great Easter Sunday meal.
But Easter is so much more
than festivities and traditions. If
we truly understood all that was
accomplished on Resurrection
Day, we would be the most
thankful and triumphant people
around. How do I know? By
looking at Christ's disciples -
the original witnesses of Jesus’
most astounding miracle. When
they finally believed that Jesus
was alive, everything changed:
those doubting and hopeless
men were transformed into pas
sionate preachers of Christian
ity.
Would you like to live with
that same confidence and un
stoppable resolve? You can - by
considering what Christ’s resur
rection achieved and then let
ting that reality be the
foundation for all you think,
say, and do. The resurrection of
Jesus is the foundation upon
which we build our Christian
faith. With our faith firmly an
chored to God’s Word and the
Resurrection we are able to live
as Christians in a hostile world.
Next week we will consider
some remarkable truths of our
faith in Jesus Christ.
Take care and God bless.

Fellowship Presbyterian
Church, ECO
Ash Wednesday Service will
be at noon on February 18. As
we begin our journey towards
Easter and Christ’s Resurrection,
we must first walk with Christ to
the Cross. During this service
we will have an opportunity to
search ourselves for our short
comings and sins that burden us
and keep us in bondage and take
them to the foot of the cross, as
we pray for forgiveness and
thank our Heavenly Father for
sending His Son to take our sins
away. Then, in observance of the
beginning of Lent and our jour
ney to the cross, we will have
ashes applied to our foreheads.
Everyone is invited to join us
during this somber, yet meaning
ful time of being in God’s Pres
ence.
Fellowship Presbyterian
Church will once again publish a
book of Lenten Devotionals for
use during the season of Lent,
which begins on Ash Wednesday
and continues until Easter Sun
day, April 5. The devotionals are
written by members and friends
of FPC, as well as the women of
the Ruth House here in Pickens
County. These devotionals help
us become “filled with the Spirit
as we prepare ourselves to walk
spiritually with Jesus on His pil
grimage to the Cross.” (Sher
wood Wirt of Christianity Today
magazine.) There will be copies
available at the church beginning
this Sunday. You may also stop
by Monday-Thursday from 9
a.m.-3 p.m. to pick up a copy.
The church is located at 389
Bent Tree Drive, Jasper.

So? What is love? What is
love, as defined, in the Bible?
This Sunday we want to answer
this question. In February, you
hear a lot about love. Have you
noticed how expensive love is?
I Cor. 13:4-5 NLT - “Love is
patient and kind. Love is not jeal
ous or boastful or proud or rude.
It does not demand its own way.
It is not irritable, and it keeps no
record of being wronged. ”
WOW! When was the last
time you saw that in a Hall Mark
card?

Join us this Sunday at 9:30
a.m. Causal dress is expected and
our location is just off Camp
Road, 1/2 mile from Roper Park.

Gospel Outreach Church has
spent the last year regrouping
after the building they used for
services burned to the ground.
In that year the church has
maintained Sunday services and
have recently purchased a new
building in Ball Ground using
money donated from the Gospel
Outreach congregation and the
community at large.
Now, this Sunday, in sym
bolic recognition of the church
rising from the ashes, a cross
sculpture made with beams sal
vaged from the burnt building
will be unveiled at the morning
service. Two metal hands appear
to lift the cross out of the flames.
After meeting a church mem
ber who saved the beams in
hopes of using them in the future
Jasper-based Artist Ed Brackin
donated his time, and designed
and forged the piece before giv
ing it to the church.

that’s the whole goal as an artist,
to make an impact.”
The cross will be unveiled at

reach Church is located at 835
Mineral Springs Road.
This cross was made using beams from Gospel Outreach
Church’s old building that burned to the ground. The piece was
made and donated by Ed Brackin, owner of Ed B’s Studio 54. Pas
tor Jerry Stewart said the sculpture shows how all people, with faith
in Christ, can survive life’s difficulties.

A MAN OF FAILURES
r

. ears ago, someone catalogued the following failures: failed
in business; defeated for legislature; failed in business again;
defeated for speaker, elector, Congress, Senate, Vice President,
and Senate. Who was this man? Abraham Lincoln, elected twice
as President of the United States! Failures do not make a failure,
they make a person. Failures hurt, but they do not stop God. He
has a way of taking the tangled failures of our lives and weaving
a tapestry that has strength, and is a body of beauty and bringer
of joy. Give thanks to God at your house of worship this week. Let
your failures make you stronger.
