Local pastors invited to free
preaching workshop
The Craddock Center in
Cherry Log invites pastors from
across the Appalachian region to
sharpen their preaching tools
under the guidance of Dr. Kath
leen M. O’Connor at the Spring
2015 Preaching Workshop. Dr.
O’Connor is the William Marcel-
lus McPheeters Professor of Old
Testament, Emerita at Columbia
Theological Seminary in De
catur, Ga.
During the workshop. Dr.
O’Connor will examine the book
of Genesis in relation to the com
munity for which it was most
likely put into its final form: the
people of Judah who survived
the destruction of their nation by
the Babylonian Empire. As
stated by O’Connor, “They and
their parents survived violent
trauma and disaster. Genesis
helps them reflect on their trau
matic past, see their barren pres
ent and, in a process of healing,
promises a future of abundant
overflowing new life.”
Dr. O’Connor has guided
workshops in local churches and
communities from Central
America to Ireland. She is
widely published, including
Lamentations and the Tears of
the World (Orbis Press, 2002),
which received first prize in
scripture from the Catholic Press
Association.
The Preaching Workshop is a
free event and will take place
Monday, March 2, from 8:30 to
noon at Cherry Log Christian
Church. The Center is eager to
greet all who actively preach for
this event and especially those
who serve Appalachian congre
gations. As news of these events
has reached beyond the distance
pastors normally travel, the Cen
ter is pleased to offer vouchers
for those traveling greater than
50 miles (one way) to defer asso
ciated costs. Seating is limited
and reservations are required so
that the Center may plan for
breakfast and lunch.
Please reserve your seat by visit

“The Resurrection
What Does It Mean?
By Rev. Ben Laughlin
Fellowship Presbyterian
Church (ECO)
This is week three in our dis
cussion about the resurrection
of Jesus Christ and what it
means for Christian believers.
The “Good News” is that Jesus
was raised from the dead by
God the Father for the forgive
ness of our sins. Now we will
consider several remarkable
truths of our faith.
The resurrection and the re
turn of Jesus Christ form the in
spiration we need to persevere
in our Christian commitment.
Regardless of societies stan
dards for human values and be
havior, we derive our standing
as God’s precious and re
deemed children from the life-
giving stone (which is Jesus
Christ - 1 Peter 2:4-8), and we
derive our standards of holy liv
ing from the Word of God. In all
our daily words and actions, we
must be concerned about our
witness to the world around us.
Because Jesus was raised from
the dead and took upon His
shoulders our sins - through our
faith in Jesus we are able to
withstand suffering for the sake
of the gospel if we look at how
Jesus suffered injustice for our
sake. And finally, the church
should always be a community
of love and support for all
Christians.
As Christians we are “Good
News” people who understand
that life will be difficult and
even mean spirited at times.
Because Easter is for real,
Christians can live each day be
lieving that God in Jesus em
powered by the Holy Spirit
walks right at our side ...
“through the valley of the
shadow of death.” We will not
end up in the valley but will
walk through the valley and out
the other side to our reward in
Heaven!
As Christians we are Easter
people. And because we are
Easter people we believe the
resurrection brings victory in all
of life. Thanks be to God!
Next week we will conclude
our discussion by disclosing
three remarkable truths of the
Christian faith which are incon
trovertible.
Take care and God bless.

began at the age of eight. While
enduring many struggles due to
a learning disability, he read a
book given to him by his parents
on the life of Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr., which changed his life
and sparked a flame in him to
want to know more about the
movement. Minister Howard
read many books and watched
every video he could get his
hands on about Dr. King and the
Civil Rights Movement. Soon he
began to memorize Dr. King’s
speeches and became known all

WHEN DO WE PRAY?
Do
•T

r o you pray weekly? Daily? Twice a day? Or like many of
us, only when all else fails? The Bible tells us to “pray without
ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17)...not three or four times a week
like exercising, nor once a month like fertilizing the garden...but
continuously. Sound impossible? Here’s how: as you attend God’s
house each week, learn how prayer is essential to your daily life,
how it can become as automatic as breathing, and how you can
focus on prayer. All you need is practice! Talk to God at your house
of worship and every day, make Him part of your routine.
