The Titanic is the most famous of all ships from the 20th Century. The White Star Line was a com
pany that built ocean liners to transport people back and forth across the ocean. (This was before
airplanes were the common mode of travel.) The Managing Director, Joseph Ismay, wanted to build
the largest and most luxurious ocean liner to compete with another company. The RMS Titanic was
one of three ships built in the Olympic Class of ships. Her sister ships were the RMS Olympic and
the RMS Britannic. It took three years to build the Titanic which was 882 feet long, 92 feet wide, and
11 stories high, making it the largest in the world. The design of the ship was said to be cutting-edge.
She was outfitted with electrical lighting, elevators, and heaters. For safety purposes, she was de
signed with a double steel hull and sealable compartments in case of a breach, deeming her “unsink
able.” For this reason, it was decided that she only needed to carry 16 lifeboats (instead of the 64
she could hold). On April 10, 1912, the Titanic set sail from England on her maiden voyage (first trip)
to New York City with 2,224 passengers and crew on board; Captain Edward Smith was at the helm.
Four days into the trip, despite various warnings, a lookout spotted an iceberg. He called for the ship
to be maneuvered away, but it was too late. The Titanic hit the iceberg which ripped open six parts
of the hull. It was too much damage, and she sank at 2:20 a m. on April 15. Only 705 people, mostly
women and children, survived in the few lifeboats aboard. Most of the ship’s passengers and crew,
including Captain Smith, went down with the vessel. Today she lies in two pieces, approximately
13,000 feet deep, off the coast of Canada’s Newfoundland Island. People have been fascinated with
the history of this disaster ever since.
