Club to collect books for children to mark World Rotary Day
The Rotary Club of Jasper gathers with club President Don Holt, Pickens County Commission Chair Robert Jones and Rotary 6910 District Governor Bill Strickland for a proclamation signing naming
February 23 as World Rotary Day in Jasper, celebrating Rotary International’s 110th birthday. Rotary’s motto is “service above self” and membership is open to the community.

The 110th birthday of Rotary
International will be celebrated
on Monday, February 23, in
Jasper and around the world.
Rotary began in 1905 in Chicago
when four businessmen wanted
the fellowship of their small
town and began “rotating” their
fellowship meetings in their re
spective offices.
Rotary’s first community
service project was to provide
public restrooms for the Cook
County Courthouse.
Today the international serv
ice club has 1.2 million members
in over 200 countries with
34,000 clubs. Since 1985, Rotary
has contributed $8 billion and
countless volunteer hours to
eradicate polio. Only Pakistan,
Afghanistan and Nigeria report
cases today.
Commissioner Chair Robert
Jones’ proclamation invites “all
citizens to join in recognizing
Rotary’s service to improving the
human condition in local com
munities and around the world.”
The Rotary Club of Jasper
was chartered in 1989 and con
tinues to do projects which focus
on “service above self’ in the
community and world. “In
recognition of World Rotary Day,
we will be collecting new and
children’s books to be distributed
to local programs serving chil
dren like Pickens Prevent Child
Abuse, ACES, Hope House,
Ferst Foundation and more,” in
formed Don Holt, president of
the local club.
The collection boxes will
have the Rotary logo and marked
Rotary Reads. Books may be left
at city hall, Pickens County Ad
ministrative Offices, Jasper Drug
and Clock Tower Gifts, Commu
nity Bank of Pickens County,
United Community Bank, Re-
nasant Bank, the Bank of North

to nearly 500 at this time. If any
one would like to donate to this
they may do so by sending a
