(Bethany is an 8th grade student
at Jasper Middle School who is
trying to raise $4,050 to attend a
Duke University program in ro
botics this summer at Georgia
Tech.)
From a very young age you
have always been highly math
oriented. Does math simply
come naturally to you or is it
something you work at because
it interests you?
It comes naturally, but I like to
learn and be challenged.
You are raising money to at
tend the Duke TIP (Talent
Identification Program) sum
mer studies program. The pro
gram will be held at Georgia
Tech for three weeks over the
summer and will focus on pro
gramming robotics. What will
you learn as part of this pro
gram?
The class will examine the
principles of robotics and learn
how robots gather and analyze
information. We will also pro
duce projects where robots ac
complish challenging tasks.
Along with donations you are
also doing other things to raise
money for the program. Tell
me about those projects?
I have been tutoring other stu
dents in math, and I have started
babysitting. My grandmother
Diane Stone volunteered to bake
and sell pound cakes, so I have
been helping her bake and de
liver cakes.
What do you want to be when
you grow up?
I don't know exactly, but I
want to do some form of engi
neering.
What do you do for fun?
For fun I like to volunteer at
the Pickens County Animal Shel
ter. I also like to play basketball,
play the piano, read, and of
course text.
Who is your hero?
I really don't have a hero, but
one of my favorite people is my
grandfather Jim Stone. He is very
wise and kind. He is a very good
example. No matter how bad he
might feel, he is always able to
crack a joke. He is an overall a
good man and a very good cook!
If you could meet one historical
person who would it be?
Benjamin Franklin. I think he
is interesting because of his ver
satility. He was very smart and
was involved in the creation and
discovery of many important
things.
Bethany is an 8th grade student at Jasper Middle School who is
gifted in mathematics. Thanks to her outstanding score on the SAT
that she took last year, she has been invited to attend the Duke Tal
ent Identification Program’s summer studies program. The three
week program in robotics will be held at Georgia Tech in June. If
she can raise the needed money, Bethany will be one of just 16 stu
dents in the class.
To raise the money, Bethany is providing math tutoring to fellow
students, babysitting, baking and asking for donations. To help get
her to this elite program, please send donations to: Bethany Carver,
55 W. Gordon Rd., Jasper, Ga. 30143.
“Every donation, large and small, will help me reach my goal, ”
she said. “I need to raise as much of this money as possible by
March 4th to secure my spot in the program. If I’m not able to raise
100 percent of the funds, I will refund all donations by May 23rd. ”
Bethany has promised to provide a report from her time in the
program to let donors know what their donation helped her accom
plish this summer.

MAKING SENSE OF INVESTING
INS-1945C-A-AD Member SIPC
We have now reached the
point of the legislative session
where lists are everywhere. It
doesn’t matter if they are the in
dividual to-do lists or the bills el
igible for consideration by the
Senate Rules Committee, all of
these lists are getting substan
tially longer every day. We still
have a long way to go in the
2015 legislative session, so these
lists are very important tools that
keep legislators on task for the
State of Georgia and the people
we represent.
The Senate approved the
Amended FY 2015 appropria
tions bill last week, which means
we are halfway to fulfilling our
annual constitutional require
ment to pass a balanced budget.
HB 75 increases the AFY 2015
budget by $276 million, bringing
the total funding amoimt to $21.1
billion. Most of this funding in
crease will be allocated towards
public school enrollment growth.
Another $20 million will be
aimed towards economic devel
opment recruitment efforts,
while $4.8 million will be di
rected towards medical trials
studying how cannabidiol may
help in treating severe childhood
seizure disorders. Since there
were some discrepancies be
tween the House and Senate on
certain line items, a conference
committee made up of members
from both chambers will now ne
gotiate a final version of HB 75.
However, the House and Sen
ate have agreed on one very sig
nificant thing when it comes to
the AFY 2015 budget - and that’s
the importance of keeping insur
ance coverage for school em
ployees who work less than 30
hours per week. The Senate also
included language in their ver
sion of HB 75 that strongly sup
ports providing these
hard-working employees with
health insurance, and I am feel
ing hopeful about the General
Assembly’s chances of finding a
way to keep our bus drivers and
cafeteria covered.
SB 3 passed the Senate and
will provide an alternative for
parents who must temporarily
waive parental rights due to cir
cumstances such as military
service or substance abuse treat
ment. The legislation, also
known as the “Supporting and
Strengthening Families Act,”
would provide an easier method
to transfer caregiving authority
to a grandparent or family mem
ber without the involvement of a
lengthy court process. Ulti
mately, it will allow parents to
adequately address the circum
stances that impact his or her
ability to adequately care for a
child, as well as preserve family
structure and stability. The bill
will now move to the House of
Representatives for considera
tion.
I presented SB 4 to the Senate
Economic Development Com
mittee, where it received a unan
imous ‘do pass’
recommendation. SB 4 seeks to
expand the definition of “urban
redevelopment” to include the
improvement of transit facilities,
sidewalks, streetscapes, trails
and bike paths. These surface
transportation projects add a lot
of value to redevelopment areas
and often act as a catalyst for
neighborhood growth and im
provement. The bill will now be
