Georgia DOT reminds residents and businesses
in northwest Georgia to turn off sprinklers
Police chase covers 36 miles before
fleeing driver runs out of gas

Ga. State Troopers and sheriff
deputies from Pickens and Daw
son counties chased a fleeing
driver for 36 miles Sunday
mainly on backroads in east
Pickens before he ran out of gas
as he turned towards the Am-
icalola River area of Dawson
County from Highway 53.
Sgt. Seth Thompson of the
Pickens state patrol post said one
of their troopers attempted to
pull over Andrew Michael John
son, 31, of Pickens County for
speeding which led to the chase.
The pursuit covered many
roads in east Pickens with
deputies joining the chase, even
tually including five pursuing
patrol cars.
Post Commander Tim
Nichols noted the fleeing driver
“knew all the backroads.”
Nichols said the speeds weren’t
extremely high as the condition
of many of the smaller roads
limited how fast they could go.
The officers made a couple of
attempts to use stop sticks,
which Johnson avoided.
Thompson said the trooper in
the chase had prepared to do a
PIT maneuver (Precision Immo
bilization Technique) by striking
the car to make it spin out, but
saw there were four people in an
extended cab S-10 pickup and
backed off with concerns that
there might be children in the ve
hicle.
Thompson said, “He saw the
occupants and thought some of
them might be juveniles as four
people in an S-10 extended cab
is pretty cramped. All he could
see was their heads. When you
take the PIT out of the equation,
it really limits your options [to
stop a pursuit].”
Finally, the driver ran out of
gas and was arrested without in
cident for a variety of traffic and
fleeing charges. He also had a
suspended license. The three
passengers were detained briefly
and released.
Thompson said the 36 miles
covered is pretty rare for a chase,
but not unheard of.
As winter arrives and temper
atures begin to dip below freez
ing, the Georgia Department of
Transportation reminds the resi
dents of northwest Georgia to
turn off sprinkler systems with
automatic timers set to run
overnight.
“Sprinkler systems that are left
on overnight in freezing temper
atures can create a hazardous
condition for motorists the next
morning,” said Dewayne Comer,
district engineer at the DOT of
fice in Cartersville. “Every year
we see accidents caused by icy
spots formed when water from
sprinkler systems gets onto the
roadway. Spray from the sprin
kler is blown onto the road or
water drains onto the road; black
ice is formed and ice develops
creating a hazard for motorists.
Please take a moment and ensure
your automatic sprinkler system
is turned off. Anytime we have
sub-freezing temperatures, please
be on the lookout for icy patches
or black ice, especially early in
the morning,” Comer urged area
residents.
The Georgia DOT urges busi
nesses and residents to ensure
that automatic sprinkler systems
are properly turned off. Drivers
are cautioned to be on the lookout
for icy patches or black ice, espe
cially as sub-freezing tempera
tures approach.
The Georgia Department of
Transportation is committed to
providing a safe, seamless and
sustainable transportation system
that supports Georgia’s economy
and is sensitive to both its citizens
and its environment. For infor
mation on the Department of
Transportation, visit

No serious injuries after transfer truck runs stop light, hits car on 515
By Dan Pool, Editor
The occupants of a passen
ger car, a 27-year-old
woman and a 20-month-old,
were not seriously injured
after a transfer truck ran the
red-light at Camp Road and
Highway 515 Monday.
Sgt. Seth Thompson, of the
Ga. State Patrol, said the
truck driver, George Martin
of New Mexico, swerved at
the last moment so that his
tires from the trailer hit the
Chevy Malibu crossing in
front of him instead of the
body of the tractor-trailer. The
swerve likely prevented more
serious injuries.
“They were very fortu
nate,” Sgt. Thompson said.
“If it had been a square im
pact, it would have been
much worse.”
The driver of the Malibu
was transported to Piedmont
Mountainside with some in
juries. The 20-month-old,
who was properly installed in
a child’s car-seat, was unin
jured.
