Buzzed driving is drunk driving
Georgia Motorcycle Safety Program (GMSP)
holiday reminder for drivers/riders
This holiday season, the
Georgia Motorcycle Safety
Program (GMSP), a division
of the Department of Driver
Services (DDS), is teaming
up with the National High
way Traffic Safety Adminis
tration (NHTSA) to remind
all drivers and riders that
Buzzed Driving Is Dmnk
Driving and to always plan a
sober ride before the holiday
parties begin.
GMSP Manager Tom
Komjathy states; “too many
people take to the roadways
after consuming alcohol be
cause they think they are
“okay to drive.” During the
holiday season, festive par
ties and celebrations with al
cohol contribute to the
number of impaired vehicle
operators on our roadways.
Please, separate the con
sumption of alcohol with the
operation of any vehicle, on
any road/highway.”
Any consumption of alco
hol can impair your judgment
and reaction times, making it
unsafe for you to drive.
Buzzed Driving Is Drank
Driving is a nationwide im
paired driving campaign to
inform all vehicle operators
about the dangers of driving
after drinking.
Drank driving kills thou
sands of people in our coun
try every year. In 2015,
35,092 people were killed in
motor vehicle traffic crashes
on our roadways, and 29 per
cent (10,265) died in crashes
that involved a driver/rider
with a blood alcohol level
over the legal limit of .08.
This time of year is espe
cially dangerous. In Decem
ber 2015 alone, there were
840 people killed in crashes
involving at least one drank
driver or motorcycle opera
tor.
This holiday season,
GMSP and NHTSA urge you
to designate a sober driver
before you start drinking.
Before heading out for a ride,
decide whether you’11 drink
or you’ll ride/drive. If you
choose to drink, designate a
sober, reliable person to
drive. If you plan to ride or
drive, commit to not drink
ing. There are also other op
tions to get you home safely.
UseNHTSA’s SaferRideApp
to find a cab, call a sober
friend, or use public trans
portation. Many restaurants
and bars also offer a courtesy
designated driver service.
Georgia Motorcycle Safety
Program (GMSP)
The Georgia Motorcycle
Safety Program (GMSP) is a
part of the Georgia Depart
ment of Driver Services. In
addition to offering rider ed
ucation and licensing pro
grams, the GMSP also
promotes motorist awareness
programs, share the road
campaigns, and is focused on
highway safety issues affect
ing Georgia motorcyclists.
The GMSP directly operates
training sites throughout
Georgia. GMSP offers low
cost, professional training to
assist riders in improving
their skills with a Basic Rid
ers Course; Basic Rider
Course 2 (Formally the “Ex
perienced Rider Course”)
and an Advanced Riders
Course.
