After taking a break for
the Thanksgiving and
Christmas holidays, the
Pickens County FFA Live
stock Show-Team returned
to action on January 14th
with a trip to Calhoun to
participate in the North
west Georgia AgCredit
Livestock Show. The Ag
Credit Show has taken
place for more than 40
years in various forms.
This year’s show included
classes for both Beef
Heifers and Market Swine.
The show got underway
Saturday morning with the
Beef Division taking the
ring first. The Showman
ship classes came first as
Judge Jack Wall placed the
exhibitors based on their
ability to show their ani
mals based on accepted
standards.
In the 9th and 10th grade
class, Gabby Jones place
2nd, Tyler Westbrook took
3rd place, and Isaiah
Roberts came in 4th. In the
11th and 12th grade class,
Morgan Kellogg took top
honors with 1st place fol
lowed by Sarah Prather in
4th place.
The Beef Heifer Divi
sion was divided into three
categories based on the
breeding of the animals;
British, Continental, and
Commercial. In the British
Classes, Morgan Kellogg
took first place with her
Hereford entry. Gabby
Jones followed up in the
Continental Classes with a
blue ribbon for her Sim
mental entry.
The Pickens beef ex
hibitors continued strong in
the Commercial Classes
with first place ribbons
going to Isaiah Roberts,
Sarah Prather, and Morgan
Kellogg’s second entry.
Tyler Westbrook followed
close behind with a second
place finish. Kellogg went
on to have her Hereford
cross selected as the Grand
Champion Commercial
Heifer followed by Sarah
Prather’s Angus cross se
lected as the Reserve
Champion.
As the dust settled from
the Heifer Division, the
Market Hogs took the ring
with their Showmanship
classes.
Pickens was full of an
ticipation after the great re
sults from the Beef
Exhibitors. In no time flat,
the Swine folks demon
strated they were there for
business. As Judge Wall
placed the 9th Grade
Showmanship Classes, the
Pickens Exhibitors made a
clean sweep with Courtney
Dorden placing 4th, Taylor
Dobson in 3rd, Mackenzie
Hancock in 2nd, and
Dakota Thomas taking first
place. In the 10th grade
class, Shelby Stephenson,
in her first hog show ever,
placed 2nd by a hair. In the
11th grade class, the crowd
witnessed what Judge Wall
said was probably the
strongest competition of
the day as Lexi Buckner
took the Blue Ribbon and
Courtney Painter followed
in a close 2nd place finish.
In the Senior class, Faith
Parish placed 3rd and Ariel
Pritchett came in 4th.
Pickens FFA exhibitors
continued to be a dominant
force as the Market Classes
took the ring. Hometown
exhibitors placing 4th in
their classes included; Tay
lor Dobson, Elijah Odum,
and Savanah Rewis. Third
place ribbons were cap
tured by Destiny Chester,
Abby Gleason, Lexi Buck
ner, Dakota Thomas, and
Breanna Elliott. Second
place entries were shown
by Shelby Stephenson,
Zach Bjork, Cortney
Painter, and Skyler Nold.
Pickens exhibitors bringing
home Blue Ribbons in
cluded Makenzie Hancock
and Taylor Dobson. In the
Final Drive, Dobson saw
her Gilt selected as the
Grand Champion Market
Gilt.
The Livestock Show-
Team will hit the road
again this weekend with
the Swine exhibitors head
ing to Union County and
the Beef exhibitors travel
ing to Carrollton, Ga.
