Contrary to popular be
lief, the band doesn't slow
down after marching band
instruments are put up!
Throughout the fall, we had
all of our extracurricular
commitments with the
marching band, two concerts,
three in-town parades and a
major trip to Philly for a pa
rade! The spring is a little
more crazy. Less structure
with the weekends, but more
events to handle.
Many of the students
signed up to audition for the
District level band and a
chance to advance to the All-
State audition this past week
end. This is done on their
own with my guidance, but
it's more work on their part.
Our District includes Pick
ens, Fannin, Gilmer, Towns,
White, Cherokee, Forsyth,
Union, and Lumpkin County.
It is a very competitive dis
trict, especially with the
Forsyth and Cherokee bands.
After 1st round auditions,
the following students ad
vanced to the second round
of All-State auditions last
weekend. They had to score
a minimum score in order to
advance. There were over
700 auditions that weekend.
Samuel Barber- Euphonium
Bethany Carver- Percussion
Faith Dement- Trumpet
Lizzie Haughwout- Tuba
Natalie Klein- Clarinet
Danielle O'Dell- Percussion
Dillon Shelton- Trombone
Dale Smith- Percussion
Roman Tapia- Flute
From the scores of that
weekend, we form a District
Honor Band - one 11-12
group, one 9-10 group and
one 9-12 Clinic Group.
These students were selected
for these ensembles:
11-12 Honor Band
Roman Tapia

9th chair clarinet
Faith Dement
9th chair trumpet
Dillon Shelton
5th chair trombone

They will attend a two-
day clinic in early February
at Fannin County HS.
And finally, the nine stu
dents who advanced to final
auditions this past weekend
at Houston County High
School did very well. 2200
students auditioned this past
Saturday and we had two stu
dents selected for the All-
State Bands!

Four Greats
This week's two NFL Conference
Championship games could be a pair
of the monumental games in history.
In a quarterback driven league, the
AFC and NFC Championships include
four of the best quarterbacks in the
game.

in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in
Canton, Ohio. They are elite quarter
backs and currently four of the NFL's
premier performers, and fans should
understand the significance of these
matchups.
When was the last time we saw four
hall of fame quarterbacks on champi
onship weekend?
It was almost a quarter century ago,
actually! In January of 1993, Dan
Marino and his Miami Dolphins lost
29-10 to Jim Kelly's Buffalo Bills in
the AFC Championship Game, while
in the NFC Championship Game, Troy
Aikman led the Dallas Cowboys past
the Steve Young led San Francisco
49ers by a 30-20 final score. The Cow
boys won Super Bowl XXVII 52-17 a
couple of Sundays later.
For someone my age, 1993 does not
seem that long ago, but it was. To il
lustrate this fact, during the 1993
Super Bowl festivities, O. J. Simpson,
who was still celebrated as a football
hero, presided over the coin toss, and
the late Michael Jackson performed at
halftime.
