Starting 2017 with a roar
Alexander Easley and Zip
Me Slowly, aka “Grade”,
won Champion in the Lead
Line Division for the 2016
show season with Rolling
Hills Saddle Club. Alex re
ceived a trophy, ribbon,
jacket, t-shirt, and stuffed
horse at the annual awards
banquet on January 8th at the
Metropolitan Club in Al
pharetta. RHSC is a non
profit saddle club and host
shows from February
through October at Wills
Park Equestrian Center in Al
pharetta.
Alexander turned five-
years-old on September 21,
2016. He began showing
Lead Line in horse shows
with his mother at the age of
15 months, with a side
walker on each side of the
horse for safety. This is his
fourth year-end champi
onship with Rolling Hills
Saddle Club, (2013, 2014,
2015 and 2016).
The past two years,
Alexander and Gracie have
shown exclusively at RHSC.
Prior to that, they also won
Reserve Champion for Lead
Line and fifth place in Small
Fry Walk Only for the 2014
show season with Newton
County Saddle Club at the
Georgia International Horse
Park in Conyers.
Alexander and Gracie
were also the Appalachian
Wagon Train High Point tro
phy winners for Lead Line
during the summer of 2014.
They won the Equine Cancer
Society’s on line Halloween
photo contest with over
nearly 2,000 votes that same
year.
Zip Me Slowly or “Gra
cie” is a 19-year-old Paint
mare, who is registered with
the APHA and PtHA. Gracie
was Alexander’s mother’s
western pleasure show horse
until his mother was seri
ously injured in an accident a
few years ago, making it very
painful for her to ride any
more.
Alexander is the son of
Pam Almond Easley and
James Easley of Jasper,
Thomas “Eddie” and Sharon
Almond of Hinton Commu
nity, David Easley of Jasper,
and Roger and the late
Cheryl Lyles of Calhoun. He
attends Pre-K at Hill City El
ementary School.
Rolling Hills Saddle Club
is a non-profit saddle club
who donated $10,000 to local
charities in 2016, including
$2,500 to Angels on Horse

raised $7,065 for Special

Cherokee County at their
May 2016 horse show.
RHSC has three arenas
running simultaneously plus

Congratulations to
Alexander on a successful
2016 show season and best
wishes for the 2017 show
season, which begins Febru

By Jumper Cable Man
Christopher Bell has
made it to the A Main of the
Chili Bowl four times. Three
of those times he started on
the front row. This year's
front row start was different.
He won his first Golden
Driller trophy.
Bell has won the USAC
National Midget Champi
onship (2013), finished sec
ond at the Short Track
Nationals (360 ASCS
Winged Sprint Cars) in 2011,
won a World of Outlaws 410
Sprint Car race (at Jack
sonville Speedway in 2013).
In 2014 Bell became a Super
Late Model series racer driv
ing for Kyle Busch Motor-
sports (KBM) and won at
New Smyrna Speedway,
South Alabama Speedway
and at Southern National
Motorsports Park. And by
the way he did this while
winning 24 Quarter Midget
races and 26 dirt races in
cluding the Turkey Night
Grand Prix during 2014.
During 2015 he started
the year off racing for KBM
and raced in two NASCAR
K & N Pro Series West races
with a 15th place and a sec
ond place finish before mov
ing on to race in the
NASCAR Camping World
Truck Series for three races
which included a win in the
Mudsummer Classic at El-
dora Speedway. At the end
of the season it was an
nounced that Bell would
compete in the NASCAR
Camping World Truck Series
driving a KBM owned race
truck.
Bell's early season was
not what he wanted with a
big crash and roll at the sea
son opening race at Daytona
International Speedway and
then another big crash at At
lanta where a tire exploded
and he hit the wall while
leading the race appeared to
be a sure winner.
Now that Bell has started
his racing year with a win at
the Chili Bowl look for him
to use the momentum of this
win to do big things when the
NASCAR Camping World
Truck Series season starts at
Daytona in February. Don't
be too surprised to see Bell
get into a Xfinity Series car
during the 2017 season. He
was in the truck version of
“The Chase” last season and
he could win it all this year.
The Ice Bowl at Talladega
Short Track in Eastaboga,
AL is also now history. The
newest winner in the Super
Late Models was Michael
Page of Douglasville, GA.
The Page racing family is
well-known over the years
especially at the old West At
lanta Raceway or Seven
Flags Speedway that existed
in Douglasville. Michael
was on the pole for the Ice
Bowl and he held the lead
from the drop of the green
flag to the drop of the check
ered flag.
Page started on the pole
by virtue of his fastest quali
fying time and the fact that
he also won his heat race.
Those two items gave him
the best seat in the house and
allowed him to race the race
track from any position he
chose. His choice was to
race low on the track as that
was where the passing would
happen. Everything worked
in his favor and he took the
win to start his racing season
on an up beat.
Other heat race winners
for the Ice Bowl were Brian
Smith of Barbourville, KY;
Donald McIntosh of Daw-
sonville, GA; Jason Hiett of
Oxford, AL; and Will Roland
of Jasper, GA. Young Will
Roland continues to impress
with his racing skills. There
were 50 Super Late Models
on hand to take those 25 rac
ing positions and Roland
beat all but four to the start
ing line. Look for this young
racer to make big headlines
in the dirt racing world in the
next few years.
It was good to see the
name Shane Tankersley of
Morganton, GA back in the
line-up. It doesn't seem all
that many years ago when he
was telling his mother that he
going to wear his driving
uniform under his graduation
gown so that he could go
straight from graduation to
the racing at Sugar Creek
Raceway (now Blue Ridge
Motorsports Park) for the
feature race. I am not sure he
got away with doing this but
he did tell his mother that
was his intention.
It sure is fun to watch
these young racers do any
thing they can in order to
race. With all the time racing
requires these young drivers
don't have idle time to waste
doing things that get them
into trouble. Now if we
could just find a way to get
auto shop back into the
schools as a class for credit.
Boyds Speedway in Ring-
gold, GA will present a
racer's swap meet on January
21 and follow that on Janu
ary 28 with their Cabin Fever
Schaeffers Oil Iron Man Se
ries feature event. Swains-
boro Raceway in
Swainsboro, GA will also
offer the racers a swap meet
along with a trade show at
the track on January 28.
Asphalt racing fans will
get to see Speedfest 2017 at
Crisp Motorsports Park (for
merly Watermelon Capital
Speedway) in Cordele, GA
on January 27-29th. This is
big event will open the start
the racing season for most of
the Late Model asphalt racers
for 2017.
Then February fines
Golden isles Speedway in
Brunswick, GA offering their
Super Bowl of Racing for
2017. This will be held on
February 8-11th and will
showcase the all new and re
designed track and all the
grounds, grandstands, pits,
and concessions. Also new
RV hook-ups are available.
February racing also con
tinues to move south with
East Bay Raceway Park in
Gibsonton (Tampa), FL of
fering racing for the Open
Wheel Modifieds, Late Mod
els and 360 Winged Sprint
Cars during the month.
Racing will take over
Florida including at Volusia
Speedway in Barberville, FL,
Bubba Raceway Park in
Ocala, FL, North Florida
Speedway in Lake City, FL
and Ellis Speedway (for
merly Lake City Speedway)
in Lake City, FL.

start times as well as events
so call the tracks if you have
questions.
