Tike Oath Of Office
Complete the Oath of Office from the U.S. Constitution, Article II,
Section 1, by using the following words: defend, swear, best,
Constitution, and President.
“I do solemnly
(or affirm) that I will ^
faithfully execute the office
of 2 of the Unit
ed States, and will to the
3
of my ability, preserve,
protect and 1 the
5 of the United
States.”
1NAUGU1RATDONI DAY
On Friday January 20, 2017, Donald J. Trump will be inaugurated as the
45th President of the United States. The United States has a long and rich
history with the transfer of Presidential power since the Country’s first Presi
dent, George Washington, was sworn into office in New York in 1789. Each
Inauguration Day is a historic event. There have been 57 different Inaugu
ral ceremonies in 10 different locations, including hotel rooms, homes, Air
Force One, the White House, the Senate Chamber, and the Capitol steps.
The Capitol is the current site for the Presidential Ceremony. Although no
two Inaugurations are completely the same, most modern ones follow the
same basic order of events. The day begins with the President-elect at
tending a worship service of some type. After this service, which is typically
near the White House, the out-going President and his successor travel
together in a procession from the White House to the Capitol where the
swearing-in ceremony takes place. At the Capitol, the new Vice President
is sworn in first. Then the new President takes the oath of office, and he
gives his Inaugural address to the Nation. Next, there is the ceremonial
outgoing of the former President. The new President and Vice President
escort their predecessors out. The former President and his wife generally
leave by helicopter. Next, the new President and Vice President will attend
the Inaugural luncheon in the Statuary Hall of the U.S. Capitol. Historical
ly, foods from the new leaders’ home states are prepared. They will then
be escorted down to the White House where they will view the Inaugural
Parade. Finally, the day’s activities end with what may be for many the fa
vorite event, the Inaugural Balls.
