Appalachian CASA is
pleased to recognize Cather
ine Sugg as Court Appointed
Special Advocate of the Year
for 2016.
Catherine Sugg has been
with CASA of the Ap
palachian Judicial Circuit
going on three years where
she has zealously served as
advocate for eight cases,
serving seventeen children!
As a retired career profes
sional with a Master’s De
gree in Applied
Anthropology, Catherine im
pacts the lives of others with
encouragement and enthusi
asm. Professionalism, regard
to detail, weighing out situa
tions before reacting are just
a few attributes Catherine
possesses. Other attributes
that come to mind are
Catherine’s willingness to
give of her time and to make
a difference to the people she
meets. She is kind, calm,
compassionate, patient and
has a heart for not just chil
dren, but all people that come
into her life. Keeping all par
ties well informed is part of
her normal routine in the dili
gent effort she gives on all of
her cases.
Keeping timelines in
mind, she makes sure that
court orders are followed and
if not, brings it back to the at
tention of the court. Many
new CASAs sit next to
Catherine in court as she is
viewed as a mentor to others.
She serves as Fannin
County Family Connections
Chair and is recognized as a
leader in her community; and
is respected for her ability to
develop, implement, and
evaluate the needs and chal
lenges facing Georgia’s chil
dren and families.
She is our number one re
cruiter for new volunteers...
she knows how to ‘tell the
CASA story’ with sincerity
and urgency. As an adoptive
mother of five, she has a per
sonal interest in ‘all children
having a safe, loving and per
manent home’.
Congratulations Catherine
for all you do!
You can join Catherine as
CASA Volunteer. CASA of
the Appalachian Judicial Cir
cuit is looking for volunteers
who would be willing to take
on the task of representing
abused and neglected chil
dren who have been emotion
ally, physically or sexually
abused and do not have any
one that will look after their
best interest as the court de
termines what is best for the
child.
In this Judicial Circuit, the
number of new cases enter
ing the system has continued
to increase, thus creating a
need for more CASA Volun
teers. If you are interested in
finding out more about our
program and how to become
a CASA volunteer, contact
our Advocacy Coordinator,

ETC IGNITE grant finalists
to present ideas Jan. 19
The inaugural IGNITE
Education Grant presented
by ETC and the Albert E.
Harrison Foundation is near
ing the competitive stages.
The purpose of the grant is to
energize each school’s efforts
to improve their overall aca
demic experience by provid
ing needed funds to help
complete student-led proj
ects. These projects must
meet a pre-determined crite
ria established by officials of
the Harrison Foundation.
The grant opportunity will
award five overall school
projects a total of $40,000.
Sixteen finalists have been
selected from schools in the
ETC service area ranging
from grades K-12. Those 16
student groups will present
their ideas to a panel of se
lected judges who will grade
each group based on the es
tablished grant criteria. The
judges will then narrow
down the finalists and award
five overall grant winners.

tween $5,000 and $10,000

project idea.
The concept is much like
the popular TV show ‘Shark
Tank’ which gives people or
businesses the opportunity to
sell their vision or ‘pitch’
their ideas to an panel of po

mately get approved for
financial backing. The IG
NITE Education Grant was
established in honor of Mr.
Albert E. Harrison as a way
to provide funding to stu

this grant will help those vi
sions become reality.
Finalists were notified
prior to the Thanksgiving

months to prepare their final
