American Legion congratulates
scholarship winners

In spite of lack of pomp
and circumstance due to the
coronaviras, three scholar
ships were awarded to Pick
ens County residents recently
for further education by the
members of Post 149 Ameri
can Legion. The $1,000
scholarships were given to
two Pickens High graduates
and one veteran. Congratula

Adam Hunt and Jordan El-
warner and to Kenneth
Smith, (photo unavailable), a
member of the Georgia Army
National Guard.
This being the third year
the Legion has offered schol
arships, a third scholarship
was added with two going to
high school seniors. “We
changed the requirements last
year offering the award to
any student with parent or
grandparent having military
service. The addition of
grandparents opened the eli
gibility to many more deserv
ing students,” said
scholarship chairman Steve
Hammer. “All of our appli
cations were highly qualified
and selecting only two was
difficult. We wish we could
award all of them,” he added.
Students were selected based
on the student’s goals and ob
jectives, academic achieve
ment, extracurricular
activities, community/church
involvement, teacher recom
mendation and financial
need. The scholarship for a
military veteran was based
on the same qualifications
with a recommendation from
his/her employer.

Atlanta - Restaurants, supermarkets and
liquor stores would be able to make home de
liveries of beer, wine, and distilled spirts in
Georgia under a bill that has cleared the Gen

The state House of Representatives gave
the legislation final passage 114-45 Thursday,
two days after it cleared the Georgia Senate
overwhelmingly.
Supporters argued legalizing home deliv
ery of alcoholic beverages is particularly
timely in the midst of a global pandemic that
has forced Georgians to shelter in their
homes.
“COVID-19 has shown we need this in the
state of Georgia,” said Rep. Kasey Carpenter,
R-Dalton.

Cannabidiol, better
known as CBD, may be one
of the most broadly thera
peutic plant extracts of our
time. It comes from the
cannabis sativa plant, but
our CBD is not from the
USDA defined marijuana
plant, rather it comes from
“Industrial Hemp.” This
distinction is what makes
the extract legal as well as
differences in medical ap
plications due to chemical
uniqueness with high CBD
quantities. Along with its
lengthy list of therapeutic
properties, it comes with the
backing of the medical
community, the World
Health Organization, the
nursing community, and the
veterinary community.

passed in recent years, the home-delivery bill
is subject to approval by local voters.
“A local community can say, ‘Not in our
town. Not in our city,’ ” said Rep. Brett Har
rell, R-Snellville, who introduced the bill into
the House.
The Senate loaded up Harrell’s bill with a
number of other related provisions as it made
its way through that chamber.
It would broaden the so-called “Sunday
brunch bill” the legislature passed two years
ago allowing restaurants, hotels and wineries
to serve alcohol on premises starting at 11
a.m. on Sundays. Under the new bill, the law
would be extended to sales of liquor by gro
cery stores for off-premises consumption.
The legislation also would expand the cur
rent law allowing tastings of limited amounts
of beer, wine and spirits from wineries and
distilleries to package stores.
The measure now goes to Gov. Brian Kemp
for his signature.
