COVID-19
ment of these patients into
our ongoing approach, while
also meeting the healthcare
needs of our much larger pa
tient base. Our patients trust
Piedmont for everything
from emergent to ongoing
medical care. We typically
don’t release information on
the number of patients on any
given day for any specific
treatment, like heart, cancer
or stroke patients. We’re
using that same standard for
COVID-19 and we trust that
the relevant state health and
emergency management
agencies are the best source
for ongoing information.
Importantly, we urge
everyone to continue keep
themselves and loved ones
safe during the COVID-19
epidemic and wear a mask,
wash your hands and watch
your distance, but equally to
seek healthcare care when
needed. It’s alarming that we
continue to see people in our
communities unnecessarily
avoiding needed health care
- even emergency care, when
it’s a life-threatening situa
tion like stroke or heart attack
where every minute counts.”

Heritage
cians, who provide bluegrass
and gospel over the two-day
October event, had already
expressed reluctance to
come, said Sams.
Sams also said she didn’t
feel right going to their regu
lar sponsors for financial sup
port when she was aware of
business struggles with
COVID-19 closures.
“It’s hard to go to some
one who has been closed
down and ask them to donate
money,” she said.
The only local festival not
to have announced their 2020
cancellation yet is Tate Day,
which usually occurs in No
vember.
Pickens/Jasper Economic
Developer Green Suttles said
the loss of the festivals will
certainly hurt the local econ
omy, though it is hard to give
any definite figures.
Suttles particularly wor
ries about the charities who
rely on festival proceeds.
More than that, he added,
money generated at the festi
val is tourist “new” money
brought to the community
that may circulate several
rounds. Money spent first at
festivals is then spent again
by the local vendors and the
non-profits who are given
donations and they may pay
their staff out of it and the
staff will then spend it lo
cally.
“[The loss of the festivals]
will hurt us all generally,”
Suttles said. “But I really
worry about how it will hurt
the charities directly.”

Also making brief re

Coster, who will work at the
clinic. He is a veteran, with
military medical experience
and lives in this area. He will
transfer from the VA clinic in
Blairsville, where he cur

He also noted in his remarks
that he will begin seeing pa

Following the ceremony,
Dr. Coster stayed to talk with
veterans about medical issues
and the VA services.
The program included the
local Marine Corps League
North Ga. Detachment and
the local DAV Honor Guard.
Brittany Walker sang the na

Park
Eino but has been modified
by city crews as the artist de
parted before it was ever
completed. At some point
after the original sculpture
was installed, the city added
a faux well and other features
for decoration.
But “Peace Park,” located
at the corner of Mark Whit
field and North Main streets,
has more or less been defunct
for over a year and in a grow
ing state of disrepair. At a city
council meeting last Novem
ber the park was discussed,
then followed by minor work
at the site.
Prior to city crews’ work
on the area late last year, a
tour of the park found plants
that were either overgrown or
dead, waterlines that were
exposed and susceptible to
freezing, picnic tables that
were broken and dangerous,
and the pool area was what
many called an unattractive
“toilet bowl” blue.
This week, much more
significant work is underway.
The city has removed or
busted up all or the marble
pieces, and has cleared trees,
old waterlines, and gravel
and debris. Jasper City Man
ager Brandon Douglas said at
this point they don’t know
what the end product will
look like, but they are mov
ing ahead with “phased
work” to beautify Jasper’s
central business district.
“In an effort to continue
enhancing the downtown
area, city leaders have moved
forward with the phased
work at Peace Park in down
town Jasper,” Douglas said in
a prepared statement. “City
crews began the work of re
moving elements of the
pocket park such as the pea
gravel and large rocks in
order to determine the sub
surface material. The phased
approach of working in this
area is to ensure the long
term viability and sustain
ability of the downtown area
and to present a favorable
curb appeal that is pleasing to
our community and our visi
tors. It is anticipated that
upon determination of the
surface beneath the rocks,
there may be the need to fill
in certain areas (if not all)
with dirt and sod so that the
gateway into downtown will
continue to be inviting and
will lead to a continued vi
brant and thriving area to
visit.”
