PHS students help to collect
31 units of blood for Red Cross
By Grant Hooker
PHS HOSA Reporter
and Leslie Zuidema
HOSA Advisor
On Tuesday, July 21st,
PHS HOSA partnered with
the American Red Cross and
held a blood drive at Mt.
Zion Baptist Church. The
drive was very successful,
obtaining a total of 31 units
of blood, which can help to
save 93 lives. This would not
have been possible without
the cooperation of Mt. Zion
Baptist Church, Pastor Ben
Mock, the American Red
Cross, and the PHS HOSA
leadership team members
that volunteered.
PHS HOSA is an organi
zation that promotes commu
nity involvement to support
opportunities in the health
care industry. Our local high
school partners with the
American Red Cross because
20% of the blood supply is
donated through high school
and college blood drives.
HOSA assists its members
to gain skills, knowledge, and
experience in their aspiring
health professions. In these
trying times, it is refreshing
to see members of our com
munity come together to help
others in need. Thank you to
all those who came and do
nated. Look for the next PHS
HOSA drive in September.

Immediately after our
2019 annual book sale last
September the Friends of
Pickens Library began plan
ning for 2020. It never oc
curred to any of us that
within six months we would
be wearing masks in public,
spending most of our time
behind closed doors shelter

sively washing and sanitizing
our hands and never being
within arm's length of our fa

world today.
We are looking toward the
future with great optimism
and have pushed our Book
Sale forward to 2021. Winter,
spring, summer and fall are
equally grand seasons for the
sale. We continue to collect,

On a positive note our cur

more opportunities to pick up
books we have wanted to
read but just couldn't find the
time. Please continue to hold
on to those books to share
with others by saving them
for the book sale until we are
cleared to accept donations.
