U.S. Secretary of Agricul

than 100 million food boxes
have been distributed in sup
port of American farmers and
families affected by the
COVID-19 pandemic
through the U.S. Department

another round of food box
deliveries, which include
contracts for purchases of up
to $ 1 billion.
“It is incredible to think
that in a little more than five
months, this food box pro
gram has gone from an idea
to a reality that has provided
more than 100 million boxes
of nutritious foods to people
The Jasper Lions Club and the First Baptist Church of Jasper are teaming up on Fri

and ranchers in business and
allowed Americans working
in our nation’s food supply
chain to get back to work,”
said Secretary Perdue. “I
have been meeting with food
banks and recipients across
the country and it’s been
heartening to hear all the pos

program has saved busi

need. We are now into the
third round of deliveries and
we’re working harder than
ever to continue to build on
the success of the program.”

Larry Cavender releases new book
Thank You for Your Service: A Tribute
reeling over the news of the
deaths, within a few short
months, of two native sons
killed in combat in Vietnam;
A family who relates their
memories of a son killed by
an IED attack in Ramadi,
Iraq; and 17 other stories of
valor and sacrifice.
Although some of the sto
ries have been published be
fore, either in the Pickens
County Progress or in previ
ous books by Cavender, there
are several unpublished sto
ries, including: The sole-sur
vivor of Torpedo Squadron 8,
whose bomber was among
the first planes to attack the
Japanese in the Battle of
Midway; A combat engineer
who, during five years of
service during the Second
World War, participated in
four separate amphibious
landings on the shores of
North Africa, Sicily, main
land Italy, and France; A sol
dier who, as a member of the
"Bloody Bucket" Division,
survived some of the bloodi
est fighting in the European
Theater of Operations only to
die in a Nazi POW camp. Of
those stories that were previ
ously published, many of
them have been updated with
additional, previously-un-
published information and
photographs.
Written in an easy-to-read
format and set within an his
torical narrative that is both
informative and educational,
these stories are sure to leave
the reader touched and in
spired. In addition, these true
stories are supplemented by
more than 100 photos from
private family collections and
vintage, archival photo
graphs.
Cavender is the author of
three previous books, two of
which are local histories in
what has become known as
the Patchwork Quilt series,
and a third book of political
commentary, The World
Turned Upside Down: A For
gotten Man's View of our
Fractured and Upturned
World.
With the holiday season
fast approaching, Cavender's
new book would make an ex
cellent Christmas gift espe
cially for veterans and history
buffs.

of the heroes whose stories are told within its pages. Of the
24 stories, more than half of them are about local Pickens
County veterans and heroes
In addition to being a

Cavender is the author of
three previous books. He is
also a former radio broad
cast journalist, a retired
teacher, and a veteran who
retired as a Technical Ser

Reserves.
In the Foreword to his
new book, Larry Cavender
states, "There is no one who
deserves our respect and ad
miration, our love and
thanks, more so than those
who have sacrificed so much
in the service of our country.
This book is my own small
way of saying to those de
serving heroes, thank you for
your service."
The book, Thank You for
Your Service - A Tribute: In
spiring True Stories of Un
common Valor and Sacrifice
of Unsung Military Heroes, is
a collection of 24 stories
which span nearly a century,
from the trenches of World
War I to the embattled streets
of Ramadi, Iraq.
Of those stories, more
than half of them are about
heroes who are connected to
Pickens County, either from
being native to the county,
from having lived in the area
at one time or another, or
from having relatives who re
side here.
Stories include: The sol
dier who, after being severely
