They are ready for empty
wine bottles, cardboard,
newspaper, and cans at the
$2.1 million state-of-the-art
recycling facility on 390 Ap
palachian Court (north of
Jasper, on the right side of
Highway 515).
Commission Chair Rob
Jones and Recycling Director
Kenny Woodard both
stressed they want your old
wine bottles, documents,
shredded paper and other re-
cyclables. (Though not styro
foam as it shouldn’t even be
made because it’s impossible
to recycle at a reasonable
cost, said Woodard).
Jones said Pickens has
opened a new era of recy
cling which will turn a profit
for the county, rather than
being a drain on the budget.
They are projecting $530,000
in revenue for 2021. The
county purchased the former
Self Recycling facility and 18
acres in November of 2019
for $1.3 million and have
spent another $700,000 in
converting it into the county
center but they believe this
investment will pay off and
quickly.
The Camp Road Recy
cling Center opened in the
1980s and had outgrown its
space. This location closed
on Thursday, October 29th as
the new one opened. The
Cove Road recycling center
continues to operate.
Woodard discussed Thurs
day how the new large cov
ered facility and Big Blue
gives the county the ability to
turn out high-quality streams
of recyclables that are easier
to sell and bring higher prices
