Letters to the Editor
To the Editor:
I would like to express my
appreciation to Dan Pool, ed
itor, for the inclusion of the
column “Plants of the South
east” in the Pickens County
Progress.
This column, by John Nel
son, PhD, retired curator of
the A.C. Moore Herbarium at
the University of South Car
olina, is a valuable addition
to the newspaper, and a great
benefit to those who want to
know more about the amaz
ing botanical diversity that
we are blessed with in Pick
ens County.
In conjunction with the
newspaper column, I can also
testify that Dr. Nelson offers
prompt responses to requests
for plant identifications. In
these difficult times when so
cial, political, and physical
health challenges can be
overwhelming, it is a gift to
be able to find solace in the
beautiful plants growing
freely in our natural sur
roundings. Thank you again
to the Pickens County
Progress for helping us enjoy
the “Plants of the Southeast.”

To the Editor:
I would like to get on my
soapbox—but the following
scriptures get to the root of
the Truth: Galatians 5:22-25:
"But the fruit of the Spirit is
love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, goodness, faithful
ness, gentleness, self-control;
against such things there is
no law.
Now those who belong to
Christ Jesus have crucified
the flesh with its passions and
desires. If we live by the
Spirit, let us also walk by the
Spirit."
If you haven't already,
please go on YouTube and
listen to President-elect
Biden's acceptance speech.

To the Editor:
My letter this week is a
public service offering. If
you've noticed neat little
holes across your lawn, all
left open, so you know it
wasn't a squirrel burying an
acorn. If all the holes are like
a funnel. If there's not 4 or 5,
but 40 or 50 holes. If you sent
photos of the holes to the
County Extension office, and
they don't know what made
them. Today, is your lucky
day.
After two years of filling
in all the damage to a lawn I
take some pride in, I finally
got a look at the varmint.
My yard must be a haven
for grubs and I've managed to
attract an industrious ar
madillo.
He/she got so use to the
free meals, it finally showed
up during daylight hours. I
can attest to the article in last
week's paper [Armadillos
making themselves at home
here], they do have a sort of
pork flavor. But they're a
booger to clean.

To the Editor:
In all of recorded history,
except for the Roman repub
lic, all of the countries of the
world were ruled by dictator
ships or monarchies until
America was formed. Think
about this for a moment. The
American democratic repub
lic was established when all
of the other countries of the
world were dictatorships or
monarchies. The entire world
except for America was run
by individuals. Nobody be
lieved that the citizens should
run the country. Only Ameri
cans believed that the people
should run the country. What
a wonderful concept.
Our American democratic
Republic holds sacred,
amongst many things, the
vote. The vote of all of it’s
citizens. Joseph Stalin once
said that '...It is not who
votes that counts but rather
who counts the vote... ’ It ap
pears in this recent election
that statement is all too true.
Problems abound. Some say
fraud, some say errors.
In Pickens County there
are less than 30,000 resi
dents. For the election super
visor to have miscounted
votes is terrible. It is unac
ceptable for such a small
county to lose so many of its
resident’s sacred votes. Writ
ten procedures need to be in
place to prevent this from
ever happening again.
This is not the first error
that Ms. Roberts has made.
In the past she qualified a
candidate for election who
was not a resident of the ju
risdiction for which he was
running. This was the elec
tion for mayor of the city of
Nelson. She certified candi
date Larry Ray as a resident
of Nelson when he was not.
Mr. Ray owns several prop
erties in Pickens County but
he did not reside in the one
that is within the city of Nel
son. His other properties are
in unincorporated Pickens
County. A review of the pub
lic record shows that Larry
Ray claimed his Homestead
exemption on a property that
is in unincorporated Pickens
County. Homestead exemp
tions are to be used as tax
abatement for your place of
residence. Mr. Ray was sub
sequently elected mayor of
Nelson. When questioned on
the subject Ms. Roberts de
ferred to the board of elec
tions. The board of elections
was questioned on the sub
ject of the procedures that
were in place to qualify can
didates for office. They per
sonally told me that they did
not have any written policy.
This to me was unbelievable.
This is the second error, of
which I am aware, that Ms.
Roberts has made. How
many other errors exist? She
needs to be replaced by
someone competent.
