The story "Celestine Sib
ley: A Heavenly Journalist" is
a retrospective on the life and
career of the renowned At
lanta Journal reporter and
columnist.
Petty spent several
months connecting with Sib
ley's former friends, family,
and colleagues in order to
write the tribute. The winter
issue of Georgia Backroads
will be available in stores in
cluding Ingles and Walmart
in December.

Alzheimer’s Association offering
education on stress management
and self care for caregivers
While the on-going coro-
navirus (COVID-19) pan
demic still threatens the
health of millions in this
country and around the
world, it continues to create
additional challenges for
people living with
Alzheimer's and all demen
tia, their families and care
givers, including 150,000 in
Georgia and their estimated
540,000 caregivers.
In a continued response
to the COVID-19 pandemic,
the Alzheimer’s Association,
Georgia Chapter will pro
vide a new free virtual pro
gram - Stress Management
and Self Care During
COVID-19. The virtual
workshop will provide de
mentia caregivers and their
families’ information and
education about typical
stress reactions brought on
by the pandemic, helpful
coping strategies, and avail
able related resources. The
program is scheduled for
Tuesday, December 8 and is
in partnership with the Geor
gia Department of Behavior
Health.

In addition, the Georgia
Chapter will be offering a
free virtual education pro
gram “Tips for Caregivers
During the Holidays”, a pro
gram designed to help care
givers manage the holidays
and help provide a less
stressful environment for

with dementia.

The Alzheimer’s Associ
ation, Georgia Chapter are
continuing to offer free vir
tual education programs and
online support groups to
help all Georgia caregivers
and their families. Launched
in early April in response to
the impact COVID-19 was
having on those affected by
dementia, the Alzheimer's
Association now offers a
number of education pro
grams that can help those
living with Alzheimer’s and
their families understand
what to expect so they can
be prepared to meet the
changes ahead.
Other free education pro
grams in December include:
Effective Communication
Strategies, 10 Warning
Signs of Alzheimer's, Un
derstanding Alzheimer's and
Dementia, Legal & Finan
cial Planning and Healthy
Living for Your Brain and
Body.
Each virtual education
program is approximately
one hour to one and one half
hours and allows the audi
ence to ask questions and
engage with others going
through the journey online.
Attendees are invited to
join via video/webinar or
through a toll-free number.
There is no charge to partic
ipate, but registration is re

Alzheimer’s Association has

English classes via Zoom
In previous years, free English Classes met at Pickens
County Recreation Center every week. These classes are still
available, but on Zoom. Beginning the week of August 31,
you may join each Monday at 6 p.m. or each Thursday at 8
p.m. for a free 90 minute practice. The Thursday class is a

The 40th annual North Georgia Toy Run will be held on
Sunday, December 6th. The event is a 45 mile ride. Everyone

"Christmas with Cherokee
Chorale" December 13
The Cherokee Chorale, directed by Scott L. Martin, will
open its 33rd season with a live streamed performance of
beautiful holiday music. The concert will include selections
by John Rutter, Dan Forrest, a medley of songs by John
Williams from the movie Home Alone, along with audience
favorite Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus" from The Messiah.
Sunday, December 13 at 4 p.m.

Highland Rivers Board meeting
The Highland Rivers Health Governing Board of Direc
tors will meet on Wednesday, December 9 at 10:30 a.m. via
teleconference due to circumstances necessitated by the pub
lic health emergency involving public safety. The meeting is

Chicken, sweet potato
soup
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 large onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 cups cubed sweet potato
1 medium green bell pepper, chopped
2 tablespoons chili powder
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 15-ounce can low-sodium cannellini beans,
rinsed
2 C. low-sodium chicken broth
1 cup frozen corn
2 cups cubed cooked chicken
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground pepper
Sour cream, avocado and/or cilantro for gar
nish
Heat oil in a large pot over medium-high
heat. Add onion, garlic, sweet potato and bell
pepper; cook, stirring occasionally, until the
vegetables are slightly softened, 5 to 6 min
utes. Stir in chili powder, cumin and oregano
and cook, stirring, until fragrant, 1 minute.
Add beans and broth (or stock) and bring
to a boil. Reduce heat, partially cover and sim
mer gently for 15 minutes.
Increase heat to medium-high and stir in
corn; cook 1 minute. Add chicken and cook
until heated through, 1 to 2 minutes more. Re
move from heat. Stir in salt and pepper. Serve
topped with sour cream, avocado and/or
cilantro, if desired.
