Daffodil Project, a memorial to
the children of the Holocaust
Submitted By Jasper
Rotary Club
Winter Weather Preparedness
Week begins Monday
Jasper Rotary’s Peace Park
has a new addition thanks to
the Pickens Master Gardners
and the Daffodil Project. The
organization serves as a liv
ing memorial for the 1.5 mil
lion children who were
murdered during the Holo
caust.
The park’s 10’ foot marble
monument with the phrase
“May Peace Prevail on
Earth” (written in eight lan
guages) was the ideal setting
for the Daffodil Project
bulbs. The Peace Park signi
fies Rotary’s commitment to
“peace through service.”
Due to the virus only a
few Rotarians, Gardeners and
community members at
tended the ceremonial plant
ing of the last 50 bulbs.
Daffodil Project coordinator
Mike Weinworth thanked the
groups for their involvement
and noted Jasper’s garden is
being billed as the first of
The Daffodil Garden Moun
tain Trail.
Dee Boggus, president of
the Master Gardeners, said
“we had to do this garden for
the children because as a
teacher I just shuttered at
what happened during the
Holocaust.” Other Master
Rabbi Martin Pomeranz, Rotary President Max Cay lor, Mike Weinroth of the Daffodil
Project, Dee Boggus, president of the Master Gardeners; and Mayor Steve Lawrence
gather at the Daffodil Project Name Plate.

Gardeners who made the new
memorial garden are Charlie
Cleneay, Heather Giambra,
Elaine Landrum, Paula
Adams and Linda Waitsman.
The Daffodils serve as a
representation of the yellow
stars that Jews were forced to
wear during the Holocaust
and yellow is the color of re
membrance. Also, Daffodils
represent hope for the future
with a burst of color each
spring signifying renewal.
As the last planting was
being done others read biog
raphies of some of the 1.5
million murdered children
which left everyone some
what dazed by putting faces
and names with the bulbs.
Rabbi Martin Pomeranz,
Blue Ridge, closed the plant
ing with a brief history of the
Holocaust, thanked the town
for remembering the lost
children and challenged that
we should never let such a
horrific event ever happen
again.
